House of Representatives Illinois--Fulton County Rawalt, Milton, 1843-1928 Description An account of the resource The Rawalt family descended from Revolutionary War soldier John Rawalt and his wife Ann McMahon, who lived in New York and Pennsylvania. Their son, John Rawalt, Jr., was born in Pennsylvania in 1780, married Elizabeth Yocum Snider in 1800, and they had nine children including a son, Jonas.  Jonas Rawalt settled in Fulton County, Illinois in 1829, and in 1836 was elected to the Illinois legislature, where he served two terms. In the Civil War, Jonas served as a major in the 7th Illinois Cavalry, but resigned due to ill health. Three of his sons also served: Enoch, in the 8th Illinois Cavalry, Company F; Benjamin, in the Minnesota Volunteers; and John, in the 51st Illinois Infantry, Company I, who died on 9 October 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee, after being mustered out. Marguerite Rawalt was born in 1895 in Prairie City, Illinois, the daughter of Charles T. Rawalt (the son of Enoch and grandson of Jonas), and Viola Bell Flake. She was a tax attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, and held the highest position ever attained there by a woman at the time of her retirement in 1965. She married Major Harry Secord in 1937, but because of discriminatory employment laws, kept their marriage a secret for three years. Rawalt served as president of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1954-1956, and as national president of both the Federal Bar Association and the National Association of Women Lawyers. Following her retirement, she began a second career as an activist for women’s rights. She had been appointed by President Kennedy to the President’s Commission on the Status of Women in 1961, and President Johnson reappointed her to the succeeding Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, of which she was a member until 1969. She was a charter member of the National Organization for Women in 1966 and became its first General Counsel. She was an original incorporator of NOW’s Legal Defense and Education Fund and a charter member of the Women’s Equity Action League (WEAL). She testified before Congress on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment and worked for its ratification.  Marguerite Rawalt gathered the photographs in the Rawalt Collection as part of her research when writing a comprehensive family genealogy entitled, "Descendents of Captain John Rawalt." Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. Smith was an Assistant State Entomologist (1906-1914) and orchardist (1914-1966) in Ozark, Illinois. He was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Fruit Belt Service Company, Federal Land Bank of St. Louis, Illinois Horticultural Society, and the Ozark Public School. He was instrumental in the development of the University of Illinois Extension Service experimental farms in Johnson County.  Smith married Grace Selby of Bartlett, Ohio on December 28, 1906. Together they operated a three hundred acre apple and peach orchard and raised a family of eight boys and two girls. Five of their sons serviced in the military during World War II, one of which died in New Guinea in 1944. Grace was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, girl’s 4-H, Tri-County Home Bureau, Ozark Home Bureau, Ozark District School Board and the P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association). In 1952 she was proclaimed Mother of the Year by the Illinois Golden Rule Company. A daughter, Alice Elisabeth (Betty) Smith (1913-1973), graduated from the University of Illinois (B.S. degree in Home Economics) in 1937 and the University of Colorado (M.A. degree in Home Economics) in 1943; taught home economics in the Crete Public schools (1937-1943); served as a University Home Demonstration Agent (1943-1947), and worked as Assistant State Girls’ 4-H Club Leader with the University of Iowa at Ames (1947-1954). Betty completed a series of home economics overseas assignments through the Agency for International Development in the United States State Department that took her to the Philippines (1955-1957), Iran (1957-1961), Morocco (1962-1963), Nigeria (1963-1966), and Southern Vietnam (1967-1970). She returned to Iowa in 1970 to serve as Extension Home Economist and Head of the Extended Nutrition Program in Des Moines. Betty was in charge of Mrs. Patricia Nixon’s visit to the program on March 1, 1971.
