Indeed if I had been allowed to stay there and protect the Union men or had had the means of arming them for their own protection I would have sent him to St. Louis for trial as I could neither protect or arm the Union men I yielded to their advice and let him go. I am still satisfied that I was right. From Canton we moved to Monroe Mo for the relief of Col. Laclede Linn Co Mo July 23d 1861 Gov Yates Dear Sir: Ardent, impetuous, often wrong, but always intending wright, I feel that I owe you an apology for not believing your statement that this war is simply to put down Rebellion & not for the extinguishment of slavery. I never for a moment doubted your sincerity but beleived you were deceived in the intentions of the administration. Since then I and a number of others of my county - through the false representations of some malicious persons - were taken prisoners sent to St [L?] - kept there a few days - then sent to Palmyra where I was discharged by Col Smith 14th Ill. The others sent to Quincy kept a few days & discharged by Col Palmer - no charges appearing against us. In all this round I had numerous conversations with the officers & became convinced that you were right & I wrong in my convictions. They all declare that they would have nothing to do with the war if my opinion was correct. We of the south were led into this error by designing politicians & some of your northern Democratic papers conjoined by the ranting <hr /> of the Abolitionists; whose declarations we took as an expression of the Northern sentiment. I was a conditional secessionist - wanted our gov & legislature to arm the state & the convention to secede if we found our constitutional rights were to be invaded but as the issue was tried in our election of the convention & the action of that body was for unconditional union I felt myself bound, as a good citizen by it. Hence when our governor & legislature undertook to take the state out the Union by the military bill I could not endorse the act knowing that they were not empowered to do such an act for the people of the state of Mo : and that our convention was yet in existence & could pass an ordinance of secession if it became necessary to do so to protect our constitutional rights. Notwithstanding the opinion of many to the contrary, I see nothing in the acts of the Federal government in Mo infringing on our rights & as I have become convinced that the government intends simply to do justice to all sections, I can truly say that I am no longer a Conditional Secessionist but a Union man: In fact I feel bound to this course by the acts of our convention, in any <hr /> event as it was selected to determine that great issue for us. When the President first called for troops I was panic stricken & was anxious for our governor to arm the state beleiving that the Convention would meet & secede. As it did not (& acted wisely in not so doing) I did not & never can give my consent or aid to the Rebellion of Gov Jackson. I have just heard of the deplorable fight at Manassas. It makes my blood run cold to hear of such slaughter of brave Americans. Oh God can not something be done to stop this terrible war! I think Congress should pass a resolution similar to the one offered by Mr Breckenridge & rejected a few days ago. If it would do so the south should immediately lay down her arms; if she did not she would have no excuse. The kind gentlemany treatment of Cols Smith & Palmer & their officers has been salutary with myself & neighbors & is doing more to put down secession than brutal treatment or bullets could. I feel satisfied that none of the sixteen will ever do aught against the government - I know that we from our hearts condemn this [miserable?] <hr /> guerilla war & bridge burning in Mo and am happy to state that no outrage of the kind has been committed in our county. Cannot you give me some appointment, either civil or military, until times grow easier, so that I can go into business again? I freely admit that my military education is rather limited, but I am more than willing to learn. If <hr /> you can place me in the army, I should prefer the Quarter-Master's Department; but I am willing and anxious to go anywhere, and do anything so only I can be useful to my country, and earn a support for my family. Robinson Crawford County Ill July 25th 1861 Hon Richard Yates I should like to be of some Advantage to the Government in the present struggle and an idea suggested itself to my mind to day which I have thought proper to lay before you. I am well acquainted with all that region of country near the present location of the Confederate army and the country lying between Alexandria and Warrenton, I propose to visit that section gather all the information possible which may be of service to the Federal Government and report the same to Headquarters I am satisfied in my own mind that I can gather information which will be of great benefit to our commanding officers when the next attack is made and I am willing to take the risk on my own head of being detected by the confederates. As a matter of course it would not be known to but few here that I was acting in the capacity of "spy". I have hinted the matter only to S.D. Robinson Crawford County Ill July 25th 1861 Hon Richard Yates I should like to be of some Advantage to the Government in the present struggle and an idea suggested itself to my mind to day which I have thought proper to lay before you. I am well acquainted with all that region of country near the present location of the Confederate army and the country lying between Alexandria and Warrenton, I propose to visit that section gather all the information possible which may be of service to the Federal Government and report the same to Headquarters I am satisfied in my own mind that I can gather information which will be of great benefit to our commanding officers when the next attack is made and I am willing to take the risk on my own head of being detected by the confederates. As a matter of course it would not be known to but few here that I was acting in the capacity of "spy". I have hinted the matter only to S.D. [Merserve?] and James H Steel Esq of this place who like myself deeply deplore the result of the late battle. Duquoin Perry Cou Ils July 26 1861 To His Excellency Richard Yates Govener of Illinoise Dear Sir allow me to inform you that I have this day been reliably enformed that there is a regular organized band of Cessionist in the adjoining to ours [illegible] Jackson County and that a few days ago they marched through the Steets of Murfeysborough under a Cecession flag - thirty five in number - The names can be obtained by addressing Judge George McCleere Duquoin of if necessary I will go and obtain the names of all that <hr /> there seem marching under the flag - Tom Logan a [illegible] to John A Logan was one of the principle leaders.- There is a nother band of cecessionist some 12 miles north east of here in Jefferson Co The names of principle leaders can be given when called for - can not some of the Boys stop attend to them and take them along to Cairo. John Mills being in the battle of Bunker Hill of Revolution memory, I am anxious to do something to perpetuate the Goverment for which they fought and wish to serve in that Capacity - that I can do the most good - viz as Assistant Surgeon - And I would especially wish to be connected with the Reg to rendez vous at Kankakee two companies forming here <hr /> to go there - I would also say that I gave two weeks of gratuitous service to the 25th Reg Ill vol at St Louis Mo last year - You have my certificate from the Medical board. Ross, requesting that letters from this place, might, at once, be forwarded to you, requesting that our Townsman S. M. Hays may be appointed Colonel of the new Regiment of Cavalry which it is thought will be accepted from this state, or if, from any cause, or for any reason, some other Gentlement should be preferred to that appointment, that your Excly be respectfully requested to appoint Major Hays Colonel of the first Regmt of Infantry hereafter raised, (or to be officered,) from this state. Our fellow citizens here, in view of the manly stand taken by him, despite the treasonable predilections of some of his quondam political <hr /> associates, believe this appointment eminently due to Maj. Hays - Col. Ross just informed me that he had written you, presenting Hays' claims & urging his appointment, and in this request I most cordially join, and hope the appointment may be, not only agreeable to your Excellency's inclination, but also compatible with your sense of official duty.
