In December 1932 a large methane gas explosion in the Moweaqua coal mine killed fifty-four miners. The accident led to the passage of new federal mining safety legislation which phased out the use of carbide miner's lanterns in coal mines. Title A name given to the resource Henry Horner Collection Description An account of the resource Governor Henry Horner (1933-1940) was elected in 1932 and reelected in 1936; however, he died in office during the third year of his second term. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. His huge collection of Lincolniana became the foundation of the Illinois State Historical Library and its successor institution, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Governor Horner also holds the honor of being Illinois's first Jewish governor. Items in this collection include portraits of Governor Horner, images from President Franklin D.
