Grierson began his working career as a music teacher in Jacksonville, Illinois, in the 1850s. He enlisted in the Army as a private in the 6th Illinois Cavalry rising via promotions to Brigadier General of Volunteers after leading raids through Tennessee and Mississippi in 1863. He is best known for leading the successful Grierson's Raid during the Battle of Vicksburg in the spring of 1863. After the Civil War, Grierson remained in the Army, receiving an appointment to serve as commander of the 10th Cavalry, or the “Buffalo Soldiers, in 1866. He held several commands in the western United States including the District of the Indian Territory, the Department of Texas, the Department of Arizona, and the District of New Mexico. Army Description An account of the resource Robert Underbrink was a World War II veteran from Jacksonville, Illinois, He served with Company A. 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division in Germany and Czechoslovakia in April/May 1945, and after VE Day (1945-1946) with occupation forces in Freystadt, Neumarkt (Newmarket) and at the Plattling SS Prison Camp in Germany. Underbrink attended Shrivenham American University, England in late 1945. Underbrink was one of three sons of J. E. and Lena Underbrink who served in World War II. His brother William was also in the Army and his brother Earl “Pete” was in the Navy. Underbrink attended Illinois College (B.A., 1944), State University of Iowa (B.S. 1949) and University of Chicago, (M.L.S. 1958). He was a librarian at University of South Florida (1961-1962), MacMurray College (1962-1969), and was head librarian at Lumpkin Library at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, for 23 years before retiring in 1990. In December 1932 a large methane gas explosion in the Moweaqua coal mine killed fifty-four miners. The accident led to the passage of new federal mining safety legislation which phased out the use of carbide miner's lanterns in coal mines. Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
