House of Representatives Illinois--Fulton County Rawalt, Milton, 1843-1928 Description An account of the resource The Rawalt family descended from Revolutionary War soldier John Rawalt and his wife Ann McMahon, who lived in New York and Pennsylvania. Their son, John Rawalt, Jr., was born in Pennsylvania in 1780, married Elizabeth Yocum Snider in 1800, and they had nine children including a son, Jonas.  Jonas Rawalt settled in Fulton County, Illinois in 1829, and in 1836 was elected to the Illinois legislature, where he served two terms. In the Civil War, Jonas served as a major in the 7th Illinois Cavalry, but resigned due to ill health. Three of his sons also served: Enoch, in the 8th Illinois Cavalry, Company F; Benjamin, in the Minnesota Volunteers; and John, in the 51st Illinois Infantry, Company I, who died on 9 October 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee, after being mustered out. Marguerite Rawalt was born in 1895 in Prairie City, Illinois, the daughter of Charles T. Rawalt (the son of Enoch and grandson of Jonas), and Viola Bell Flake. She was a tax attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, and held the highest position ever attained there by a woman at the time of her retirement in 1965. She married Major Harry Secord in 1937, but because of discriminatory employment laws, kept their marriage a secret for three years. Rawalt served as president of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1954-1956, and as national president of both the Federal Bar Association and the National Association of Women Lawyers. Following her retirement, she began a second career as an activist for women’s rights. She had been appointed by President Kennedy to the President’s Commission on the Status of Women in 1961, and President Johnson reappointed her to the succeeding Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, of which she was a member until 1969. She was a charter member of the National Organization for Women in 1966 and became its first General Counsel. She was an original incorporator of NOW’s Legal Defense and Education Fund and a charter member of the Women’s Equity Action League (WEAL). She testified before Congress on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment and worked for its ratification.  Marguerite Rawalt gathered the photographs in the Rawalt Collection as part of her research when writing a comprehensive family genealogy entitled, "Descendents of Captain John Rawalt." House of Representatives Photographers Description An account of the resource Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. Images taken by the photographer Samuel Alschuler are included in this collection. During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library. After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. Circuit Court (3rd Circuit) Davis, Sarah Woodruff Walker, 1814-1879 Davis, Sarah W., 1852-1934 Description An account of the resource David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. Shortly after, I was attacked by a fever with typhoid symptoms – the third attack within four months – and acting with advice of my physician I determined to quit the establishment. I had been engaged in it fourteen months. My proposition to Mr. Sheehan was, to take $800 for my service (I was an equal partner with Sheehan & Mottison) during and for the time of my <hr /> connection with it, and give to them freely and without pecuniary consideration my entire interest in The Press and every other item and species of property. My proposition was accepted. $800 is all the money I every received out of the business as it progresses, and from my partners on having them.
