Office of Lieutenant Governor Editor Hoffmann, Julius Carl, 1848-1935 Bankers Description An account of the resource Francis Arnold Hoffmann was born in Hereford, Westphalia, Prussia, and came to the United States to escape conscription. Hoffmann settled in Chicago in 1839 where he studied for the ministry and was put in charge of the Lutherans in northeastern Illinois serving as pastor in Dunklee's Grove until 1847. In 1847 Hoffmann was named pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumberg. Four years later, he quit the ministry and moved into Chicago where he studied law and engaged in real estate and the insurance business. He was named to the Chicago City Council in 1852, serving through 1860. Hoffmann established a bank in 1854 which failed during the Civil War. Hoffmann was appointed consul for several German states and he was the first editor of the German newspaper, Illinois Staats Zeitung. He was one of the organizers of the Republican Party in Illinois and in 1860 was elected Lieutenant Governor of the state. Hoffmann established the International Bank at Chicago in 1866 and was active in restoring banks and businesses after the Chicago fire in 1871. When he retired in 1875 he became editor of a German farm paper in Milwaukee called Der Haus und Bauernfreund; Die Deutsche Warte of Chicago and the Deutsches Wolksblatt of Buffalo. (Roland Jehu), 1892-1944 Indiana--Logansport Description An account of the resource Captain Alexander Kinnear Ewing (1840-1874) was one of the three sons of the early Logansport, Indiana settlers, John M. (1814-1867) and Jane Kinnear Ewing (1818-1887). Captain Ewing served in the Civil War, rising from the rank of private to captain in Company B, 128th Indiana Infantry, seeing action during the Atlanta Campaign under General William Tecumseh Sherman. Upon returning from the war, he married Louisa Francis Harris (1844-1899) in 1865 and served as Deputy Postmaster and then Postmaster of Logansport, until his untimely death at the age of thirty-four. His wife, Louisa, served as Postmaster for a brief period after her husband’s death and remarried in 1881 to Jehu Z. Powell. Before Captain Ewing’s death, he and Louisa had one daughter, Jennie Ewing (1868-1923), who married Charles E. Marshall in 1887. Charles E. Marshall and Jennie Ewing Marshall had four sons, including Roland Jehu Marshall (1892-1944). Roland and his wife, Eleanor, had two children, including Francis Dwight Marshall. Jennie Ewing moved from Indiana to Illinois and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. House of Representatives Photographers Description An account of the resource Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. (Ephraim Samuel), 1824-1896 Description An account of the resource Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a major American poet, was born in 1879 at 603 South Fifth Street in Springfield, Illinois to Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Catherine Frazee Lindsay. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Elizabeth Graham, friend of Lindsay, was a founding member and curator of the Lindsay Home from 1958 to 1978. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. William (1812-1899) and his wife, Mary Ann, had five children live to adulthood including George Wade Bacon Sadorus (1838-1911) and Henry Washington Sadorus (1840-1927).
