Affairs here are becoming more complicated. Refugees of both parties are seeking safety among us. Several rebel soldiers have brought their families across & returned to fight.

Their spies have traversed the county.

Their visits make them familiar with it.

They will find 20 miles of road here, together, either one of wh would probably afford more supplies to an army than any one mile of some counties in the state.

We find that cheapness will quadruple our numbers, if we purchase our own arms.

We suppose we need for cavalry a Minnie Rifle (short, 32 metres & with a strap) & Minnie Cartridges. A pair of pistols, one smoothbored (to carry buck shot, for use in the nights) & one rifled. A Sabre; short & heavy for unskilled hands.

In these perillous times to Constitutional Liberty and the Union of these States it becomes the duty of all good citizens to render all the aid possible to the great cause and for these considerations

Dear Sir

I offer you my servises for any duty where they will be of the most use to the Country. I have had several years experience in Military drill in one of the best N. York Regiments and have drilled some companies of late that are now in Missouri. Perhaps I could be of some service in drilling the troops in Camp Butler near Springfield. In these perillous times to Constitutional Liberty and the Union of these States it becomes the duty of all good citizens to render all the aid possible to the great cause and for these considerations

I make any offer of my servises that may be acceptable

As to buissness it never was better than it is at presant with me not even in more prosperous seasons but I am willing to throw it up if I can be of any servise in a better cause

Respt yours

F. P. Brown

Please addres in care of N. Jackson

I suppose I can sufficiently master the details to discharge the duties devolving on the Major of a regiment, but one of the other positions spoken of would please me far better.

My only excuse is the enclosed extract from the Chicago Tribune of yesterday. Provided i could not have my first choice in the matter of an appointment similar to that just conferred on Col. Louis D. Hubbard of Chicago - I would like to be one of the agents spoken of in the Tribune article. I suppose I can sufficiently master the details to discharge the duties devolving on the Major of a regiment, but one of the other positions spoken of would please me far better.
