Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. The program, led by Russian-American violinist and orchestra conductor Nicolai Sokoloff, employed musicians, composers, and conductors throughout the United States including more than 400 people in Chicago. The program provided funding for music festivals, classes, and concerts as well as the creation of 34 orchestras. The Federal Music Project conducted research on several genres of American music with a special emphasis placed on traditional American music and folk songs including cowboy, Creole, and African American music. National Guard Coal miners Mining industry Miners African Americans Description An account of the resource In September 1898 representatives of the United Mine Workers of America stopped a railroad car in Virden, Illinois, filled with potential African American strikebreakers. The train continued on to Springfield after the union members informed them of the strike between the members and the Chicago-Virden Coal Company. On October 12, 1898, a second train of African American strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama, and security guards arrived in Virden. The security guards opened fire when striking miners attempted to surround the train at the entrance to the mining facility. The train departed Virden after twenty minutes of gunfire and headed for Springfield. By the end of the conflict four security guards and seven striking miners were killed and 30 people were wounded. The mine owners accepted unionization at the mine in November 1898 and the mine remained segregated for many years after. Similar conflicts occurred in Pana on April 10, 1899, Lauder on June 6, 1899, and Carterville on September 17, 1899. Still Image A static visual representation. Typographical Union No. 177. During the 1970s the Jacksonville, Decatur, Danville, Quincy, Taylorville and Hannibal, Missouri, locals joined Number 177 and in 1975 the name changed to the Central Illinois Typographical Union. The union was part of the International Typographical Union which formed in 1867 to advance the interests of the printers and to promote harmony among them. The first issues the unions dealt with were pay, working hours and conditions. After the unions became more established they worked for more long term concerns such as old age pensions, mortuary benefits and paid sick time. The unions also worked to start an apprentice program. In 1915 the Springfield local voted to make the term of apprenticeship five years, with pay of $5.00 per week the first year. Jacksonville’s union joined No. 177 in 1897. It was not until 1971 that Taylorville joined. Then Decatur merged with the Springfield union in 1975, Quincy in 1976 and Danville in 1978. The union's name changed to Central Illinois Typographical Union in 1975. In the 1980’s computers became prevalent and allowed for the writer and editor of a story to also act as printer. This caused union membership to drop drastically. Circuit Court (3rd Circuit) Davis, Sarah Woodruff Walker, 1814-1879 Davis, Sarah W., 1852-1934 Description An account of the resource David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. Supreme Court Judges Antislavery movements Trumbull, Julia Maria Jayne, 1824-1868 Politicians' spouses Description An account of the resource Lyman Trumbull was born in Colchester, Connecticut on October 12, 1813, to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Mather) Trumbull. In 1837 he moved to Belleville, Illinois, and won election to the state legislature as a Democrat in 1840.  Trumbull was appointed Secretary of State from 1841-1842 and later a justice of the State Supreme Court from 1848-1853.  As an opponent of slavery Trumbull joined the Republican Party in 1854 and ran successfully against Abraham Lincoln to become a United States Senator from Illinois. Trumbull remained in the United States Senate until 1873 after which he resumed practice of law in Chicago. In 1880 he tried as a Democrat for Governor of Illinois but was unsuccessful.                        While in the United States Senate he favored new bills opposing black slavery, passing a bill ending slavery in District of Columbia, which was amended, allowing blacks to testify in federal court and supported a bill which forbade the use of the Union Army to return runaway slaves to their owners.  In 1864, Trumbull worked with another senator to create the Freedman’s Bureau to help blacks with housing and, later, education.  He also voted for the first reconstruction act that created a new voters list that included African Americans.   Trumbull’s most prominent legislative achievement was his proposal of the 13th Amendment originally written by Senator John Henderson.  The 13th Amendment amended the United States Constitution so that slavery and servitude was illegal and it gave Congress the power to enforce it.  Trumbull was also a leading supporter of the 1866 Civil Rights Bill that was designed to protect freed slaves form Southern Black Codes. Trumbull was one of seven Republicans who broke party ranks and voted against the conviction of President Johnson during his impeachment trial in the Senate. In 1872 he joined other Liberal Republicans in supporting Horace Greeley’s presidential candidacy against the reelection of President Grant. He married Julia Jayne (d. Aug. 16, 1868) in June of 1843 and they had four children. Julia Jayne served as a bridesmaid at Abraham and Mary Lincoln's wedding. His second marriage was to Mary Ingraham, on November 3, 1877, with whom he had two daughters, Alma and Mae. Only one son survived Trumbull in death.  He died June 25, 1896 in Chicago. Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. Willard Graves earned his fortune in South America before returning to life in Mendota, Illinois. In 1867 Graves purchased over 15,000 acres of land in Nebraska as a land speculator. Graves donated a large sum of money for the purpose of establishing the Mendota Public Library in 1873.
