<text>John McAuley Palmer was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1817. His family emigrated to Illinois in 1831, settling near Alton. Palmer entered Shurtleff College 1834 where he stayed two years. He moved to Carlinville in 1839 and read law in office of John S. Greathouse before admittance to the bar in 1839.

Palmer was elected as a delegate to the 1847 Illinois Constitutional Convention. Palmer was elected as probate judge of Macoupin County in 1843. He won election to the Illinois State Senate in 1852 and served until 1856. Palmer helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, serving as President of the Bloomington Convention in May 1856 and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in June. Palmer was defeated as a Republican candidate for Representative to Congress.

Palmer began his military career in May 1861 as Colonel of the Fourteenth Illinois Infantry. He received the rank of Brigadier-General in December 1861, commanding the 1st Division of Army of Mississippi at Stone River and Chickamauga. He was rewarded with the rank of Major-General and served Military Commander of District of Kentucky, 1865-1866. After his time in the military Palmer practiced law in Springfield with Milton Hay beginning in 1867.

Palmer was elected Governor of Illinois on Republican ticket in 1868. He joined Liberal Republican Party in 1872 and soon after the Democratic Party. Palmer ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for Governor in 1888. He won election to the United States Senate, serving from 1891-1897. After his time in the Senate, Palmer returned to private life in 1897 where he edited Bench and Bar in Illinois (1899) and wrote Personal Recollections (1901).

The finding aid for the John McAuley Palmer Papers, 1811-1906 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/490.

Images in this collection include photographs of Civil War soldiers and miscellaneous subjects.</text>

During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>

                  <text>
The first classes at the McCormick Theological Seminary took place in a log cabin in Indiana in 1829.

</text>

It is quite impossible for any but perfectly sound, tough, strong men to endure the privations, fatigue, and exposure, to which soldiers, under our present Army Regulations, must be subject, without great suffering to themselves, and loss to the Nation. It is not doubted, that if our army had been entirely composed of such men, the result of the late disastrous battle, at Bull's Run, would have been wholly different. That the inspection of recruits, has hitherto been very inadequate, there is, unfortunately, too much evidence. For instance, twenty-two men have been discharged since the battle, on account of Hernia, from a single regiment, and this, one which was far better officered, and therefore, better cared for, and less severely tried, than most others. It is well-known to be a general rule, in civilized warfare, that where one man is killed in battle, ten die from disease; but it is too little considered, that where one man dies from disease, many score must be, for a certain period, quite unfit for service, and a heavy burden and drawback, upon the movements, the general courage and efficiency of the strong and well.

Dear Mr. Lincoln

I am glad to have the small Hesler portrait you so kindly sent and have made very careful comparisons. There appear to be four different positions made at this time.

Under separate cover I am sending you the pamphlet describing the book of the Photographs now ready for the press and upon which I have been working so long. I have decided to make it much more elaborate & expensive than I at first intended and shall spare no expense, except that the binding must be simple, as many may prefer to rebind it. I hope you will approve of the form and style of this advertising pamphlet.

Enclosed is a copy of an unusual portrait of Wilkes Booth I have recently acquired which I would like to add to your portfolio. I have still another, now being copied, which I will send you also, a little later.

I have sent Mr. Sweet a copy of the pamphlet.

Faithfully yrs

F.H. Meserve

Dear Mr.

Following high school graduation, Felts entered the University of Illinois at Champaign. In college Felts became the “Campus Scout,” the author of a humorous column about college happenings. From 1923 until 1926, he worked as a sports editor for the Illinois State Register in Springfield, Illinois, and then served briefly as a United Press reporter. Following a year of post-graduate study at Harvard University, Felts returned to Springfield in 1928 and became an editorial writer and columnist.

In December 1935, Felts joined the Lindsay-Schaub chain of newspapers as an editorial writer and moved to Decatur, Illinois. He became editorial page editor for the Decatur Herald and Review in 1958 and two years later, he was editorial page editor for the entire Lindsay-Schaub chain. Felts also wrote his own column, called “Second Thoughts.” The column contained folksy reminiscences about past events and observations on current affairs.

Felts officially retired in 1967, but he continued to write his column three times a week for the Lindsay-Schaub newspapers. The column ran until Felts’ real retirement at the age of seventy-five. In 1975, Felts moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida, with his wife. Felts died in March of 1985.

Felts, who was interested in local and state history, was a long time member of the Illinois State Historical Society. He served as Society director from 1980 to 1983 and was elected vice-president in 1983. In July 1958, Felts was appointed by Governor William G. Stratton to the Illinois Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Felts was also active in the Friends of the Decatur Public Library, serving as a trustee for the Library from 1951 to 1960 and as president of the board of directors from 1953 until 1955.

The finding aid for the David V. Felts Papers, 1908-1978 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/215.

Photographs in this collection include several images of David Felts at his desk and with newspaper colleagues, group photos of Decatur civic organizations Felts was a member of, and aerial photographs of Springfield, Illinois.</text>
