The Chicago Edison Company (later Commonwealth Edison Company) purchased the Pawnee Railroad in 1905 to transport coal from Illinois' coal fields to Chicago Edison's power plants in Chicago. After changes in company coal usage, the railroad went back into use, this time transporting coal from western states into central Illinois. After railroad deregulation in the 1980s, Commonwealth Edison sold the railroad in late 1987. The railroad was sold several more times.

The finding aid for the Chicago and Illinois Midland Railway Company (Springfield, IL) Records, 1889-1956 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/127.

Photographs in this collection include images of railroad employees at work, railroad operations, railroad engines and cars, and railroad accidents.</text>

The Chicago Edison Company (later Commonwealth Edison Company) purchased the Pawnee Railroad in 1905 to transport coal from Illinois' coal fields to Chicago Edison's power plants in Chicago. The railway's name changed to Chicago and Illinois Midland Railway Company at this time.

Commonwealth Edison attempted unsuccessfully to sell the railroad after the passage of the Clean Air Act in the 1960s.

Being “Officer of the Day” and also being compelled to remain up all night, the idea struck me that I would write you a few lines.

We are cut off from outside communication. If you was ever “cut off” you can comprehend our situation, and condole with us. I assure you that the feeling is any thing but a pleasant one. For a man to be isolated may be all well enough, but the state of isolation when taken in conjunction with that of hunger is almost beyond human endurance. Hard crackers & old “Ned” (Bacon) are luxuries almost unthought of in our little army here. We are seriously thinking of converting our old boot legs into soup. But we hope for better times.

I heard through John Frierson of the death of his mother. I was not surprised to hear of it. She has had enough trials to kill her long ago poor woman. I recd a letter from Ad. to night from our model Sutler [Lom?] I am nearly crazy to see her. I thought perhaps I could through you get a transfer from my present position into the Dept. at Springfield. I resigned and they refused to accept it. I am unwilling

to tax the benevolence of my friends especially as you had already been so kind to me; but the present situation of things demands my presence nearer home. Any effort for me I assure you would (if I can ever be more your friend than I am) secure my eternal friendship and gratitude, valueless as it is. I have for 18 months served the country as as faithfully as under the circumstances I could. I have always been at my post for duty & think I am entitled from the Government to a small portion of its patronage. <text>
Nashville November 19th 1862

Friend Rutherford,

Please answer this Direct to Nashville via Cairo and put on the envelope “Follow the Regt.”

Truly Your Friend

Remarks on the isolated condition of the army of Nashville. “Very destitute of provisions.

Should like to be transferred to nearer home, and wishes Gov. to get him a transfer from his present position to the Department at Springfield. Sent in his resignation, but it was not accepted.

Send proper answer.

Ans. Dec 4.

Please excuse the Envelope. It is one we took from the Rebs. at New Madrid and all I had by me.

I know of no man who has labored more earnestly and effectually to maintain the principles of the Republican Party, and has spent more time and money, and is now subjected to greater trials and distress than I have. My labors commenced in the Spring of 1854 and were continuous till we achieved a triumph in 1860, resulting in my complete bankruptcy, while it has been the feathering of the nests of hundreds who have not done a tithe of the work I have.

I would like to be in the service of my Country; but cant leave my family to starve. I will take most any position down to Commissary. Please let me hear from you.

Dear Sir,

I know of no man who has labored more earnestly and effectually to maintain the principles of the Republican Party, and has spent more time and money, and is now subjected to greater trials and distress than I have. My labors commenced in the Spring of 1854 and were continuous till we achieved a triumph in 1860, resulting in my complete bankruptcy, while it has been the feathering of the nests of hundreds who have not done a tithe of the work I have.

I have asked the Administration at Washington to help me out of my troubles and am treated with contempt and insults; a Democrat that I have been fighting against for years, and one who of all others would rejoice at seeing me neglected has been

appointed to an office over my head.

I would like to be placed in a position where I can earn bread for my family. Of the many places at your bestowal can you not give me a chance? I would like to be in the service of my Country; but cant leave my family to starve. I will take most any position down to Commissary. Please let me hear from you.

Most Respectfully

[Translation.]

The members being called to order, the master speaks:

“Dear Brothers: An illustrious mason, a great citizen, the very dear brother Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, fell by the pistol of an assassin on the 14th of April last.

“A keeper of flocks, a laborer, a woodman, a lawyer, Brother Lincoln grew up to work, a self-made man.

“He abolished slavery. Honor to the memory of that good man who has been of such signal service to the cause of humanity.

“Let us give, then, a triple battery of mourning to the memory of our very illustrious brother, Abraham Lincoln.”

Brother Vallarino then sang an anthem, composed by Brother Mercadier, and set to music by Brother Coll, a member of the lodge

Brother Mercadier then speaks:

“May the song you have just heard bear beyond the ocean the expression of our profound regrets. May our affliction, mingled with that of the world, temper the sorrow of the widow and children of the great citizen who has given his life for liberty.

“In destroying the last vestiges of slavery, he finished the task begun more than eighteen hundred years ago, by the Just Man, who was crucified for wishing to free the human race.

“Lincoln’s was a great mission upon this earth, and he has most nobly fulfilled it. May he live forever in all hearts! May his noble figure beam in the future and serve as a beacon to all friends of humanity.

“Let us then, my brethren, give a triple salute of joy, in honor of the great, firm, glorious, and immortal Abraham Lincoln!”

It was unanimously decided that the banner of the lodge should be veiled in a mourning of crape for seven days: and that an extract of the minutes of this session should be sent to the Grand Lodge of the State of New York, with the request to have it sent to the widow of the very illustrious brother, Abraham Lincoln.
