My attention having frequently been called to the condition of things at Paducah, KY and the restrictions on trade with this place calls upon me to [detale?] [certain?] facts to you and our [horse? ] trade has been opened up in Paducah to settle Merchants since Comd. Parre left there and they are having the [ ] matter just as they want to hide certain restrictions have been held over all the Merchants at this place and recently Genl. Meridath has ordered all the crafts [ ] of all kinds [ ] ordering persons to not I said to hunter...without they are permitted. We have taken the responsibility on different occasions to stop

[ ] goods on the bank or in crafts and Merideth has sent down for them and taken them away this was not known to me til it was done and I now give you notice of the facts hoping that it may be [ ] it does not belong to his department and no doubt goes to his rivals account. we are trying to keep [ ] and robbers both [ ] and if we can have your protection when in a pinch we will help them strate if we have to use a rope to do it. Comd. Parre did more for our county and that of his Districts in KY while he was there than all the commanders that [ ] was there and to my satisfaction and all the loyal men was [ ] and just and did nothing that any loyal man could complain of but was feared by the robbers and copperhead even in Metropolis and I am sorrow to say that kind Merideth is just the opposite

There is [agreed ] anxiety on the part of many of the citizens of this place to have a post established here which may have a good attendance and would pay its own expenses no doubt by [ ] good that might be captured there is person hear that could attend to the command without quitting their business as it would be a small matter. hoping to hear from you on this subject [ ] I am your most obedient servant, A. W. Neely.

Sir. Enclosed find recommendation tor Capt. Wm. D. Blackburn. It speaks for its self He is a No. one man & fills the bill -

I am now out on the open Sea, fiting the Rebels of this County - We on Saturday made our ticket, and in order to Save the Union party - we made a ticket of all Union Democrats - I yielded up "My place" like a man, to beat the Damn rebles, We can now lick them -

Mr. S. P. Read is our Candidate for the Convention. He is right on all the questions especially on the Distsricting that we Secured. Now you see that I have declined to Save the County - & make a Shure thing of it -

Now Sir - I do most ardently desire some little patronage from you. I recd your letter a few weeks Since, Saying that you had placed my name on your list of applicants. Now Govr - I hope you will not forget me, we have fought shoulder to shoulder for 15 years, & you can now help me in this my time of need

! Is there no place in some of these Reg.ts. thta you can give me, Comisary, qr. Master, or something else - I know that you desire to assist me if in your power & that you are bored to death with such epistles - I cant do that ! Can I rely upon anything with Certainty - You can advise me of this fact at once & that settles the question. I would not have asked for anything if I had of taken the risk of this County, in this Election, but to Save the county & Secure the delegate to the convention I give up my chance,

Now, My Dear Sir, if you can Consistantly give me Some nice place - I shall be under and lasting obligation to you. I await your reply -

I am with Respt

Yours

G. W. Rives

P.S. I will make one suggestion - ! Can you give a Gr. Master de Comisary position, Can it be in the regt into which Capt B Co. goes -

His Excelency, Govr Yates

Springfield

Ills.

My Dear Sir -

Having a good chance of sending this by private [hand?], I avail myself of the opportunity. In your last letter, you say "there will be a call session of the Legislature"

Now, from the stand point I occupy, I cannot see that we are to gain anything by the Convening, unless it be that this Great Lo.co." Koran" should be adopted. Then & in that event the legislature might redistrict the State, for Congress &c & by that means, elect our men to the next Congress! But is there a majority yet in both branches? One thing I would suggest, which is this, In the Proclamation Convening the legislature, would it not be well to leave out the subject of the State assuming any portion of the direct tax. The opposition party are down on this tax, & in the event they do adopt this "Koran" Let them take the responsibility & not us, for should it be adopted (& I fear it will) they will make a H--l of a dash & Rush to fill all the places made vacant by it. But we intend to contest that point with them, and the feeling on my side of the State

is, that we will beat them with the present incumbents for state office & in this there is many democrats that will help us. The Fathers & bros of many of the sick & wounded Soldiers will never forget or forsake Gov. Yates in a contest for the position you now hold & that has been so satisfactorily filled by you. I hope this "Koran" may not be adopted, we are doing all we can against it but the party is directed to go for it. Our men are a unit [to?] it together with some Lo.cos.

? Cant you find some place that you can place our friend Capt. T. J. Buntain - he is a Democrat - but O, God - what a Union Man, he is a terror to "secesh" in this place

Now if you can make him a Lieut Co some place or qr. masters assistant, or some position above a private, that will be satisfactory he has a hard time with his bro. Lo.co. they know he has made some efforts in that line, & they taunt him by saying that he is sold &c

I my former letter I said he was a man of no Education This was to broad. what I should have said, he was not finely educated I take occasion to say now that he has a plain old fashioned education, & writes a fair hand & good in Old Pikes arithmetic. Now if you can put him some such place as I indicated, You will do us a great favor & never have cause to regret the step.

I will press the matter, any more knowing that if you can you will fix him up.

His Excelency, Govr Yates
