<text>
Hamilton Sept 15th / 63

Hon Gov Yates

Sir

Duty to myself and family prompts me to solicit your aid in getting my second son discharged from the service of the United States.

I am a widow with eight children six of whom are now with me, and five are small, the eldest of the five is 13 years old, the youngest two and and a half. The oldest one with me is James the son before mentioned, he enlisted about a year ago (against my will being under age) in Co. C 118th Ill Volunteers and during the siege at Vicksburg while out skirmishing he with the others were taken prisoners and taken round to Richmond and Annapolis [illegible] where they were parolled

and sent home and he is now in daily expectation of being exchanged and called back to his Reg. He has been very anxious to join his Reg but still feels that it is his duty to stay with his mother . On serious objection I had to his joining the army was his health, which is not improved and then I am getting to be advanced in years. I am 46 years old with poor health and small means I am renting a farm which I shall be unable to carry on without my sons assistance.

My oldest son has been in the service over two years. He enlisted early in the rebellion. I yielded him up sorrowfully yet willingly mingled with a felling of pride that I could make so great a sacrifice to in so noble a cause. I still had a son left to assist me in support of my family, and I felt that it was his (my eldest son's) duty to respond to his country's call. But I cannot feel so with regard to my second son going for he is my main dependence. And now though you may not have the authority to grant his discharge, yet if you will use your influence to obtain it for him - my son, James H. Greene is his name, you will confer a lasting favor upon his mother

Mrs Harriet Greene

I shall be compelled to decline speaking any where until the first day of Oct., on that day I have consented to speak to a State Mass Meeting in Dayton Ohio, and thence I have to go to Washington, and I fear I shall not be able to get back until about the 25th, and therefore think it will not be safe to make the appointment in your section until the 25th or say 26th or 27th. If that arrangement will suit, I will be most happy to comply with

the request of my friends, provided however you can arrange another matter. Our friend, A. C. Terrill & others of Whitesides Co. are anxious for me to speak at Sterling or Morrison or some place in Whitesides, and I wish very much to gratify them as far as possible, but every County in the State is pressing me to come, and I can only speak to a good many counties at a time. Now I desire you to see our Whitesides friends and for you & them to compromize on the point and then I will be sure to be there, and hope we will have a rousing big meeting and a good time. Every meeting now should be a rouser.

I have written to friend Terrel the substance of this letter and I hope you will see each other immediately and let me know by your joint letter what is the result. You will find that then is just as good a time for the meeting as [now?]

Your friend

If that arrangement will suit, I will be most happy to comply with

Now I desire you to see our Whitesides friends and for you & them to compromize on the point and then I will be sure to be there, and hope we will have a rousing big meeting and a good time. Every meeting now should be a rouser.

I have written to friend Terrel the substance of this letter and I hope you will see each other immediately and let me know by your joint letter what is the result. You will find that then is just as good a time for the meeting as [now?]

Dear Sir,

Some short time since, I addressed you a note, respecting the great want of Coal Miners in Illinois - Lest, in the great multitude of business which I see has lately engrossed your attention, my communication has escaped your notice, I take the liberty of enclosing your another - It is for the hands of President Lincoln, or the proper authority for such matters.

The case offered by your State at the present time, is an unusually strong one- for the simple fact, that such is the scarcity of Colliers throughout Illinois, that many of them are now earning as much in one day, as, to my knowledge, can only be earned in

a week by some of the best Colliers in Great Britain and the effect of this must come home to the consumers throughout the State.

I am well acquainted with all the Mining Districts throughout England, Wales, & Scotland, and being a practical miner, know how to address the men you want, by easy familiar letters which I propose to write, and insert in such papers as have chief circulation amongst them. The papers I allude to, circulate upwards of one million copies per week.

If this were done for a few months, I apprehend there would be a great improvement for the better in eh state of the Coal Trade of Illinois, as well as for the consumers.

I should suggest that a copy of my communications be handed

or forwarded to you - for your inspection - indeed, I could make Springfield my headquarters - and I have little doubt but plenty of opportunities would offer for my introducing English Capital into the State as well as working miners

I hope you will pardon the liberty I take in addressing you again - and allow me to leave this subject to your favorable consideration

I am,

Dear Sir,

St. Louis, Missouri

19 Sept. 1863.

To His Excellency

Abraham Lincoln

President of United States

Sir,

I came to this country with some miners from Lancashire & Yorkshire in England, with a view to engage in Coal Mining in Illinois, my purpose however has for the present been frustrated. But during the short time I have been here, I have been strongly impressed with the great need there is for more working Colliers in the State of Illinois.

The public papers have for some time past, exhibited many instances of insubordination and riot on the part of the men, who are combined in a League throughout the state, for

the maintenance of exorbitant wages, and other regulations of an oppressive character. It is not long since I visited La Salle, and learned from Col. Taylor, that some of his Colliers had been earning as much as 6, 8 & even 10 dollars a day - whilst to my own knowledge, the best Colliers in England could not earn more than one dollar per day. The high price of Coal here, is a natural result of this state of things -

Now there are thousands of steady hard working miners & Colliers in England, who would readily come over here, if they knew that by so doing they could effect such a permanent improvement in their condition - as is the case with every industrious and steady man who settles here. But they don't know these things in England -

I propose therefore, as a prac

tical miner, to write a series of easy familiar letters, addressed to the miners & working Colliers in Great Britain, pointing out to them in a plain manner, the great advantages that are here within their reach, and insert them in such papers as have chief circulation amongst them in England, Wales, & Scotland. There are plenty of philanthropic men, as Richard Cobden & others, who would give countenance to such endeavours if needed - as it would be a mutual benefit to the miners themselves, as well as to the State & Country where they settle -

I should be happy to engage in this work, for my sympathies would go with it & it would be both a pleasure and a duty - and I would devote myself to it for the sum of $100 per month besides travelling Expenses

My communications could be made

in duplicate, one copy being handed to any authority in the State you name -

Commending this matter to your consideration,

I am,

19 Sept.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient servant

If your Excellency has not already made the appointment for this city I would reccommend to your favorable notice Mr. Uriah P. Bennett, a resident of this city, who holds the appointment as Sanitary agent for Minnesota and other States; I know Mr Bennett to be a true, honest, upright Christian man, and whose heart would be interested in the work. Mr Bennett is an unconditional Union man -- for many years the Editor of the Zanesville Courier and Gazette, and who was one among the first to espouse the cause, and to advocate Lincoln's election--. If your Excellency can confer the favor upon him, in doing so you will oblige yours truly T. H. Cavanaugh
