Yates Respected Sir: Though I never wrote a letter to a Gov, in my life, yet pardon me for this once, and listen to my plea. I request your influence and assistance in getting a furlough or discharge for a sick son - He enlisted in the U. S. Service two years ago last August, in Co. H. 33 Reg. Ill Vol being then (16 1/2) sixteen and a half years old. He has been in active service nearly all the time since. A year ago last Spring marched from Trenton Mo. to Batesville Ark. and in July performed a forced march to Helena on quarter rations & the last sixty miles with <hr /> only one meal. Last winter he spent the nearly all his time marching through Missouri - most of the time on half rations - wore out his shoes & went through snow 8 or 10 inches deep barefoot or nearly so. Early last spring he was sent to Vicksburg, after spending some five or six weeks in the Ditches, he performed the march & fought the battles from Grand Gulf to Jackson, then back to the rear of Vicksburg, there he toiled till Vicksburg surrendered. For three months before that event he was sick with ague & chronic diarrhea When he was so weak he could not stand up an hour, he would get a reclining position & act as sharp shooter. The day of the charge along the line (22 of May) he fired two hundred rounds in this way. This son (Henry Steele) has been in Hospital since July fourth, Part of the time in Vicksburg the rest of the time in <hr /> General Hospital Benton Barracks Ward D. When he first came up to St. Louis he could walk around, but he has gradually run down till he can not sit up but a little while at a time. We have some hope of his recovery if we could get him home, but non if he stays there. I have visited him there & know he has every comfort. I do not urge the change because he suffers for comforts. I don't. They are kind to our sick soldiers. But he has been sick so long, he is childish, and is anxious to come home, therefore I urge; that the change might do him good. The Surgeon in charge told me if he could have his way about it he would send all with that disease home. I have one more favor to ask of your Excellency if you should aid me in getting our boy home can you send me a pass to go to bring him home, He is too weak to come alone. Respectfully Yours, Mrs. E. Sir From information derived from several different sources entitled, in my opinion, to credit I have become convinced that a secret cabal of immense proportions actually exists, at this time in this State, having for its object the subversion of the State government upon the first opportunity deemed favorable by its leaders. About four months since, I induced an inteligent and trustworthy discharged trooper of my old company in the 3rd cavalry, to join these secret plotters, for the purpose of learning the object of their organization From him I have learned many interesting facts, and among others, that they have within ten miles on either side of the Q & G RR line between the West line of Brown County and Meredosia, a regiment of one thousand men, all armed with revolvers and officered completed from Colonel to corporal. <hr /> He states that the whole organization is under the command of Gov Seymour of New York That the officers and men are enjoined and sworn to act in all cases under orders from him, through their superior officers and that the paramount object of the Cabal at this time is the election in Ohio. At their meeting held near Versailles on Monday night last an order was issued requesting every man to hold himself in readiness to march at an hours notice and that this order must be strictly observed until the election in Ohio was past and until Valandingham if elected, had taken his place as Governor of the State at Columbus. The object of this order (though not stated to the men) was, as he informs me to keep their forces under marching orders & ready to execute the order of Seymour secretly imparted to the Colonel of the regiment, that in case any action or [control?] of the election in Ohio should be attempted by the military, or that in the event of V's election the military or Federal authority should attempt to prevent him from exercising the duties of the office these secret forces throughout Illinois, Indiana <hr /> Ohio Pennsylvania & New York are to rise symultaneously seize the arsenals & railroads, and by these means throw a force of three hundred thousand men immediately into the State of Ohio. My informant is in high repute with the senior officers of the regiment being their drill master, and from them he has gathered the story, whether true or not you are quite as capable of judging as I.
