Gov Yates

Dear Sir Allow me to renew afresh your acquaintance with Capt G.A. Marsh of the 12th Ill Cav. Capt Marsh carries a right arm by his side nearly palsied or rendered useless by a wound received during that ever to be remembered raid of Gen Stoneman on Richmond in May / 63. The Capt is anxious yet to do all he can towards “putting down this Rebellion” & would still lead his Company in battle although unable to defend himself. Were it not for Rheumatic difficulties that seem to have taken possession of his system, ocasioned undoubtedly from long exposure, he thinks that he may be more useful to the Govt if employed in some detached service. I can reccommend Capt Marsh for integrity & ability, having been a personal freind and acquaintance for many years & one of our working friends. Please assist him

to some honorable & lucrative position if you can. I will endorse the Capt for most anything for I know him to be made of the Right Kind of Metal. The genuine “[Thing?]” and much oblige

Your obt servt

Geo J. Bergen

I most cheerfully concur in the above. The Capt was the Republican candidate for sheriff in Fulton, in 1860 and did very much in that county (which seem to be “[illegible] to believe a lie”) to diffuse [illegible] gospel light and make [republican?] [roles?] at that time.

I am Your Excellency's Obt Servt

Clark E Carr

Bergen, George J.

Galesburg.

Feb 10, 1864.

Recommending Cap G.A. Marsh of 12th Ills Cavalry (who has been disabled in active Service) for Some position in detached Service which is fully concurred in by Clark E. Carr.

Strong recommendatory letter to Secretary of War given to Capt Marsh Feb 4 64 Recited his service in Va & requested his appt as Cavy Inspector (of horses) at Chicago or some other point in the West. Capt M was much pleased with the letter.

Hon Richd Yates

My Dear Friend

I was anxious to see you before Congress Assembled this fall.

But my domestic troubles would not admit of absence from home.

I suppose you learned through the obituary notice in paper sent you of my deep affliction, which leaves my House desolate indeed.

I had much to say to you more especialy on two subjects which imperitavely demand Legislation.

On the Currency question, the other a better method of collecting the Whiskey tax, on these subjects I have written Mr Ingersoll quite fully.

My time is pretty thoroughly ocupied

with the Office which I hold through your kindness & partiality. And which I can assure you is greatfully appreciated. While also it is my earnest desire to so perform its duties that the Treas Department may be fully satisfied.

Of one thing I am quite certain the Books & paper of the Office are kept in better shape than ever before, and I believe in all other respects the duties of the office are well done, whether Commissioner Rollins is pleased with it or not, I am not informed.

I have every reason to believe however that he is, & for your sake I sincerely hope all is satisfactory.

For Your many favors by way of public documents, please acept my thanks, I should be glad to ocasionaly hear from you & that all is well

Very Truly Yours

Geo. J Bergen,

Assessor of Internal Revenue.

5th District Illinois.

Dated Galesburg, ___ 186

In relation to the death of Mrs Bergen. Also to collection of tax on whiskey &c

DIED

In this city, of consumption, on Friday at 10 o'clock, A.M., Nov 15th, Sylvia Maria, wife of Hon. George J. Bergen, aged 41 years.

The deceased, during her walk in this life, became endeared in the hearts of a large circle of warm friends; and although sadly conscious of but a brief existence, by the approach of that most insidious of all destroyers, her faith in the Redeemer was as a bright and shining light canopying her pathway to that better world, with a “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

Two little ones had preceeded her “to that bourne whence no traveller returns” and three remain to comfort their stricken parent.

The funeral obsequies were held last Sabbath, in the N.S. Presbyterian Church, when the Rev. Rufus B. Guild, of Galva, delivered a most appropriate and beautifully illustrative sermon, in which he touchingly described the life here, and the life to come.

Angels they hover on mission of love, While breathing sweet music to spirits above. Guarding the home that by God has been given To all of his creative in Paradise. Heaven.

The vast auditorium was insufficient to accommodate the immense concourse that assembled in common sympathy with the bereaved friends of the beloved one, to hear, and participate in the last sad rite of paying tribute to the idolized Mother, the truly loving and faithful Wife, the fondly affectionate Sister and Daughter, and the patient, faith-firm and devoted Christian.

At least two thousand people were gathered in and around the edifice; and as the funeral cortege moved from its portals on the mournful march toward the silent “Village on the Hill,” the number was constantly augmented by carriages and pedestrians, until arriving at the Cemetery it presented one vast sea of human faces.

Many present remarked that it was an unprecedented assemblage, and by far the largest they had ever witnessed, in this city.

Geo J Bergen

Dear Gov.
Unavoidable circumstances prevented my seeing you to talk over matters more fully. I am anxious you should post the Mason Co. Boys about movements in Fulton Co. Kelloggs plan no doubt is to try and defeat me that he may hold a weapon over you.

Will you endeavour to find a Company of Infantry for Amos Babcock.

Can you possibly transfer a son of Doct J.W. Spauldings from the 57th to the 112th Reg. I leave Jay Babcocks letter with Gov. for your perusal his case is hard, perhaps you can find a Clerkship for him. I can not recommend him much but think he will make a good Clerk.

If P.R. Kendall does not arrange to go into Headlys Cavalry Reg, I hope you will give him authority to form a Reg under

the Melitia Law & Order No 3. I think Kendall Competent & you can do some thing for him of that sort.

Now as to a matter of which I dislike to write.

But believe a few words from you in a maner that would be above all suspicion, & could do something for me pecunarily.

J.B. Headley no doubt can procure authority from Washington to Contract for the Horses of his Reg. The Horses now being recd at St. Louis are very inferior of necessity from the price paid. What he wants is good Horses above all things.

If he can get the authority to buy them, I want the Contract I know I can furnish him good ones have bot for Gov. ever since last fall

If you can do me that favor Gov without compromising yourself, I will be very thankfull.

Says “Gen F. told him the Companies were there & he had arranged to set them of to fill 7 respective Reg but you objected, & had them organized into a Reg to favor an old “Pet” "Niles or Miles" He again arranged with Gen Catchum for a Comp & that was fugled away from him.

On the whole he thinks you State House folks a pretty hard set & intimated that he had quite a mind to defeat my nomination or if nominated election. I was sorry to find him in such a humor. I hope you will improve the first opportunity to set it right. If Gen. F. is playing the kind of game indicated from B-s remarks & from all

I hear from other quarters, I should think it was possible he may have grown to a size or two larger than his Breeches making it difficult for him to avoid showing his ---- apendix.

I am told that a Captain in Col McMurtry's Reg is very sick, and probably will not be able to go into service (Capt King) should a vacancy happen there can not you find it consistent to appoint Mr Blossom to the vacancy.

Blossom was appointed & mustered in as 1st leut by Gen Fuller of this Comp. but through some Shenanigan was finally compelled to resign in favor of one [Conger?] Gov Hoffman can tell you all about it. Also Secy Hatch. I hope you will consider his claims carefully before you decide the matter should the vacancy occur. I saw McMurtry men in Dress Parade Sunday, they are a fine Body of men & have a good set of line officers. Suppose they will get those old muskets as Babcock calls them.

My Dear Sir:

On my return this morning from the East, where I was for several weeks detained by sickness in my family, I find that your Excellency did me the honor, on the 16th ult. to write me, asking my cooperation in the work of raising a regiment for the defense of the State.

So long a time has elapsed since the date of your letter that I probably shall not have the pleasure of aiding in the good work to which you call me & which I regret I was not at home to promptly undertake. Still something may yet remain to be done & I now write to inquire if at this late day I can be of any service & to offer my hearty cooperation.

Meanwhile without waiting for a reply I shall immediately consult reliable friends here and engage their cooperation, in the work of

of securing men, if they should be needed.

As you speak of our having "an enemy in our midst, as dangerous as the rebel in open arms", I venture, I hope not presumptuously, to express my own apprehension that the catch words of certain politicians for "a free election or a free fight" are now for the purpose of preparing their followers for a violent & revolutionary assault at the polls on Election day under the pretense that the Government does not intend to allow a free Election. Perhaps these are groundless apprehensions but I cannot dispossess my mind of them, though I have heard of no one expressing similar opinions, I rest however in the hope that so far as our State is concerned, if there is danger, your vigilance and energy will not be at fault. But I fear the National authorities are not awake to the dangers that exist, & that consequences far more serious & lasting than mobs & local emeutes may result.

Most Respectfully Yours

Dear Gov
Enclosed you find a letter which explains itself. An additional fact or two may serve to convince you of the importance We Republicans attach to the considerations herein named.

A carefully prepared list (prepared by our Township Assesors.) shows that our County has sent about 1800 volunteers to the service. Previous to present enlistments, more than ¾ of whom were Republicans for instance, One Township sent 70 men only 3. were Democrats. Another sent 60, 2 of which only Democrats. And a very large majority of those no enlisting are Repubs.

Our people have put the pressure on the old ex Gov for the express purpose of getting that class of men enlisted,

They are men who will not enlist under Smith or Harding or anyone else, but on the Contrary unless drawn in by

the Gov & his Dem friends will hinder every one else from going they have power to influence.

Further Argument certainly can not be needed.

I hope you will see the importance of giving it your immediate & earnest attention. By forwarding all the requisite Authority &c &c to Gov Wm McMurtry, Henderson, Know Co Ill. At the earliest possible moment, and thereby bring into the Service a Reg of men who can not be secured by any other process, save that of Drafting.

I may say to you that the Author of the enclosed letter is a Merchant of our place & an active earnest Repub.
