I know that the Colonels have the appointment of these officials, but some of my friends suggest to me that your endorsement or <hr /> suggestion would go a great ways. If I know my own heart I am not prompted by any other motives than a desire to serve my country and make myself useful to the troops in a truly benevolent capacity. I do not thus trespass upon your attention unmindful of the delicate nature of the task. Smith can get the Regiment together <hr /> and drill it for awhile and in the mean time I will discharge my present duties & thoroughly prepare my self to discharge the duties of Lieut Col. this matter I wish you to think over and if you feel that you can do what I ask let me know but say nothing to any other mortal. His horses and men are greatly fatigued with the excessively hot weather in a two days and half's ride. Many of the men understanding that they were to be supplied with cavalry saddles at the point of rendezvous came on old and worn out saddles which have badly injured the backs of the horses. Some of the men came without any saddles at all and the result is that the backs of their horses are more galled than any of the others. A good many are not shod and so taking the whole matter together I am satisfied <hr /> that the men and horses are in a poor traveling condition. The Captain thinks it nearly impossible for him to take his men by any other means than by rail and I join him in making an earnest request for permission to send them by Railroad. Having no secure place here to keep the Powder I thought that the best place to send it This lot of Powder was shiped from Xenia Ohio to Mr Ewbanks Hamilton County in the care of M. B. Garner of this place with instructions to him to send the Magazines back as he had a quantity more to send. From the best information we can get Mr Ewbanks is a Sesessionist and Mr Garner is considered here by all Union Men as one at heart.
