Following high school graduation, Felts entered the University of Illinois at Champaign. In college Felts became the “Campus Scout,” the author of a humorous column about college happenings. This position at the university was also held by Gene Shalit, Allen Sherman, and others who later pursed careers in broadcasting and journalism. After receiving an A.B. from the University of Illinois in 1923, Felts became a reporter for the Louisville (Kentucky) Courier Journal. From 1923 until 1926, he worked as a sports editor for the Illinois State Register in Springfield, Illinois, and then served briefly as a United Press reporter. Following a year of post-graduate study at Harvard University, Felts returned to Springfield in 1928 and became an editorial writer and columnist. In December 1935, Felts joined the Lindsay-Schaub chain of newspapers as an editorial writer and moved to Decatur, Illinois. He became editorial page editor for the Decatur Herald and Review in 1958 and two years later, he was editorial page editor for the entire Lindsay-Schaub chain. Felts also wrote his own column, called “Second Thoughts.” The column contained folksy reminiscences about past events and observations on current affairs. Felts officially retired in 1967, but he continued to write his column three times a week for the Lindsay-Schaub newspapers. The column ran until Felts’ real retirement at the age of seventy-five. In 1975, Felts moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida, with his wife. Felts died in March of 1985. Felts, who was interested in local and state history, was a long time member of the Illinois State Historical Society. He served as Society director from 1980 to 1983 and was elected vice-president in 1983. In July 1958, Felts was appointed by Governor William G. Stratton to the Illinois Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. In 1975, Felts moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida, with his wife. Felts died in March of 1985. Felts, who was interested in local and state history, was a long time member of the Illinois State Historical Society. He served as Society director from 1980 to 1983 and was elected vice-president in 1983. In July 1958, Felts was appointed by Governor William G. Stratton to the Illinois Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Felts was also active in the Friends of the Decatur Public Library, serving as a trustee for the Library from 1951 to 1960 and as president of the board of directors from 1953 until 1955.  The finding aid for the David V. Born in Galesburg, Sandburg attended school until the age of 13 when he left to work several jobs to help his family. In his late teens Sandburg served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American War. After leaving the military Sandburg enrolled at Lombard College however he left the school before finishing his degree. Sandburg worked as a newspaper writer in Milwaukee and Chicago. He began publishing his poetry in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse before publishing his first book of poetry, Chicago Poems, in 1916. Sandburg received his first Pulitzer Prize for Cornhuskers in 1918. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Photographs in this collection include images of the Herdman family with a high number of images featuring the families of Henrietta Doud, Grace Harris, Ellen Gowenlock, and Octavia Huff. At a meeting of the citizens of Dublin, convened and presided over by the right honorable the lord mayor, in pursuance of a requisit on signed by a large number of the citizens of Dublin, and held at the Mansion House on Saturday the 29th April, 1865, for the purpose of expressing their indignation and sorrow at the assassination of President Lincoln, and their sympathy with the people of the United States, the following resolutions were unanimously agreed to: It was proposed by the right honorable the attorney general for Ireland, seconded by the right honorable Joseph Napier, ex-lord chancellor of Ireland, and— Resolved, That we, the citizens of Dublin, view the atrocious assassination of his excellency Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, and the attack on the life of the Hon. William Henry Seward, Secretary of State, with feelings of indignation and sincere sorrow. We feel assured that throughout the civilized world there can be but the one sentiment of horror at so revolting a crime, and, in common with the rest of our fellow-countrymen, we desire to express our deep sympathy with the people of the United States under this great national calamity. P., seconded by Professor John Elliot Kairns, and— Resolved, That while we scarcely venture to hope that any words of ours can avail to alleviate grief so profound, yet we cannot forbear expressing our heartfelt condolence with the widow and family of the late President, and our trust that they may be sustained by a merciful Providence under their sad and awful bereavement.
