Grierson began his working career as a music teacher in Jacksonville, Illinois, in the 1850s. He enlisted in the Army as a private in the 6th Illinois Cavalry rising via promotions to Brigadier General of Volunteers after leading raids through Tennessee and Mississippi in 1863. He is best known for leading the successful Grierson's Raid during the Battle of Vicksburg in the spring of 1863. After the Civil War, Grierson remained in the Army, receiving an appointment to serve as commander of the 10th Cavalry, or the “Buffalo Soldiers, in 1866. He held several commands in the western United States including the District of the Indian Territory, the Department of Texas, the Department of Arizona, and the District of New Mexico. House of Representatives Description An account of the resource Richard Yates, Jr., the son of Governor Richard Yates, Sr., was elected Governor of Illinois in 1901. Governor Yates, Jr. worked to secure groundbreaking child labor legislation in Illinois but failed to attack political corruption. He was not reelected for a second term. After serving on the state public utilities commission and as assistant attorney general, he was elected to Congress in 1918 and served in that body until 1933. Working with his daughter, Catherine Yates Pickering, he wrote a biography of his father which was eventually published in 1966: Richard Yates: Civil War Governor. Richard Yates, Jr. died in 1936 and was buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville, Illinois, the hometown and burial place of his father. Reimer and Sarah Kohlsaat were abolitionists whose home was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. The Kohlsaat family moved to Galena, Illinois, in 1854 until moving to Chicago in 1865. He became a travelling salesman, eventually working for Blake, Shaw and Company, a wholesale bakery owned by R. Nelson Blake, who was to become Kohlsaat’s father-in-law. In 1880 Kohlsaat married Mabel E. Blake and became a junior partner of Blake, Shaw and Company in charge of a bakery-lunch establishment in the city. In 1883 he brought out Blake, Shaw and Company’s interest in the establishment and started H.H. Kohlsaat and Company, which for about thirty years was one of the largest baking establishments in Chicago. He opened several lunch stores which drew a good patronage from the businessmen of the Loop district. In 1888 Kohlsaat was an alternate delegate at the Republican national convention held in Chicago. He became an early supporter of William McKinley, then Governor of Ohio, working for his nomination and election to the presidency in 1896. Kohlsaat was a friend, confidant and advisor of five United States Presidents: McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Harding.  In 1891, Kohlsaat purchased a half-interest in the Chicago newspaper Inter-Ocean. In 1894 Kohlsaat abandoned his interest in the Inter-Ocean, and purchased the Chicago Times-Herald and the Evening Post. He converted the papers from Democratic to independent Republican organs. His influence in the Republican Party helped draft the gold-standards plank during the 1896 convention in St. Louis. McKinley’s ensuing campaign for the presidency against free silverite William Jennings Bryan was ultimately won on the gold standard issues.  In 1901 Kohlsaat purchased the Chicago Record from Victor F. Lawson and combined it with the Times-Herald, naming the new paper the Record-Herald. Kohlsaat resigned the editorship of the Record-Herald for a time to devote himself to his real estate interests, but later regained control in 1910. He remained editor of the Record-Herald for two years, and then he returned to edit the Inter-Ocean. Kohlsaat left the Inter-Ocean after a year and became a member of the staff of New York Times. Kohlsaat died October 17, 1924, in Washington, D.C., at the home of Herbert Hoover. Deneen Collection Description An account of the resource Charles Samuel Deneen (Republican) served as a one-term member of the Illinois House of Representatives beginning in 1892. He was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, and grew up in Lebanon, Illinois, where his parents were among the founders of McKendree College. Deneen graduated from McKendree College and then attended Union College of Law (now known as Northwestern University Law School). He served as an attorney for the Chicago Sanitary District from 1895-1896 and State’s Attorney for Cook County from 1896-1904. In 1904, Deneen was elected to the first of two terms as Illinois Governor where he was a strong supporter of education issues and the Illinois Waterway. Deneen served one term as the U. S. Senator from Illinois (1925-1931). Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. Sir: The common council of Somma Vesuviana, at the ordinary session of the 25th instant, on motion of Counsellor Giova Errico, unanimously adopted the following resolution, which you will please bring to the knowledge of your government: The municipality of Somma Vesuviana, horrified by the detestable misdeed that deprived the great American nation of its magnanimous President, Abraham Lincoln, desires to express to his successor, as a worthy representative of that generous people, the profound sorrow it felt at the announcement of the great misfortune, and hopes that the noble cause to which that life was consecrated, and to which it was sacrificed, may soon regain its former glory with the greatest triumph of civilization. Sir: The common council of this city, during its sitting of yesterday, agreeing to the proposition made by the members, Mr. Lorenzo Chiappeti, Mr. Paul Crezza, and Mr. Cesare De Negro, and having draped in mourning their national flag, now floating from this building during the sitting of the council, have voted to the government of the United States of America, and in particular to the present consul, William T. Rice, as also to the United States naval storekeeper, Colonel William L. Long, who both so worthily possess the esteem and the kindest regard of all our citizens, an address expressing their sincere sympathy at the mournful event which deprived that nation of the great restorer of her liberty.
