<text>
Joseph G. Cannon was born in Guilford, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Horace Cannon and Gulielma Hollingsworth Cannon. After the death of his father in 1851, Joseph went to work in a pottery in Annapolis, Indiana. While working as a clerk in a store he met John F. Usher, a lawyer, who agreed to let Cannon read the law under him and work as a clerk in his office. Cannon attended law school at the University of Cincinnati, earning his diploma in six months. After attempting to set up practice in Shelbyville, Illinois with little luck, he moved to Tuscola where he worked the circuit. Cannon was elected state’s attorney in 1861, holding the position until 1868. In 1862 he married Mary Reed, from Ohio, who had come to Illinois to live with her brother and teach school. The Cannons moved to Danville, Illinois, in 1876.

Cannon sucessfully ran for Congress as a Republican in 1872, beginning what would become a 46 year career in the United States House of Representatives. During his time in the House of Representatives Cannon served on the Committee on Appropriations, eventually becoming chairman, and the Committee on Rules. Cannon served as the chairman of the Committee on Rules and as Speaker concurrently, allowing him to determine committee chairmanships and members as well as what bills would reach the floor of the House. Cannon lost this power in 1910 after a Democrat-led revolt.

Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe," rose in the Republican Party, becoming Speaker of the House from 1903-1910. Cannon is the second-longest serving Speaker of the House and was the first member of the House to pass 40 years of service (non-consecutive). Cannon lost two elections during his career in the House of Representatives (1890 and 1912) but he regained his seat in the following elections each time.

Cannon retired from the House of Representatives in 1923 at the age of eighty-six. He and his wife had two daughters, Mabel and Helen. Mary, or Molly as Cannon called her, died in 1899. Cannon died in 1926.

The finding aid for the Joseph Gurney Cannon Papers, 1879-1940 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/116https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/232.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of Joseph Cannon and images of Cannon attending events.
</text>

                <text>
To his Excellency Andrew Johnson, President of the United States of America:

The following resolution was adopted by the sixty-ninth annual conference of the Methodist New Connection, assembled in Salem chapel, Hood street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on the thirteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord 1865:

Resolved, That the conference of the Methodist New Connection, assembled in Newcastle-on-Tyne, would record the expression of its devout thanksgiving and joy on the termination of the war which for four long years has been waged at so fearful a cost of human life and human treasure between the northern and southern divisions of the United States of America. While in the war itself the conference would recognize the supreme justice of eternal Providence in making a nation, however mysteriously, and by whatever means, yet ultimately and surely responsible for the legislative or social wrongs it either authorizes or countenances, it would nevertheless and equally recognize the mercy of that Providence in the conclusion to which the war has been finally conducted, in that a great nation, so intimately allied to our own in all the interests of human civilization and Christian enterprise, has been redeemed from disorder and anarchy by the triumph of the national wisdom and courage, and especially that this has been so done as effectually to annihilate the evil out of which the war really though not ostensibly sprang, restoring to the position and privileges of manhood four millions of human beings who had previously been held as mere property by those who claimed to be their owners.

The conference also desires to unite with the whole English nation, and, indeed, with the entire civilized world, in giving emphatic utterance to its horror and abhorrence of the fearful crime by which the close of the war has been signalized, in the assassination of the late much lamented President of the United States, to whose practical wisdom and singular goodness of character maybe largely attributed the continuance of the peaceful relations existing between this country and America. Amid the jealousies and perplexities which the war occasioned, as well as to whose prudence and perseverance, together with the prudence and perseverance of those united with him in the conduct of public affairs, the result now enjoyed has been happily reached.

And yet the conference would express an earnest hope that no irritation thence resulting, however natural and reasonable, will be allowed to influence the regular course of justice in dealing with those who have taken a leading part in the attempt to divide the Union, by establishing a separate confederacy, and that in fact no means will be adopted but such as will, under the superintendence of the Great Ruler, tend to conciliate the affections and interests of the parties hitherto so much divided, and so restore them to a condition of permanent harmony and peace.

Signed on behalf of the conference:

WILLIAM BAGGARLY,
President.

<text>Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.”

Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.

On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years.

The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.

The finding aid for the Monticello College (Godfrey, IL) Records at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/2/resources/545.

The finding aid for the photographic Monticello College Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at https://illinois.as.atlas-sys.com/repositories/3/resources/4702.

</text>

March 24th/65

To His Excellence the President of U.S.A.

Hon Abraam Lincoln

Dear Sir

I trust you will be indulgent with us, for the sake of the Bible & of America, in attempting to teach you, now on the last score of human life, the Greek language & appoint you, while most busily engaged in America, an assistant Bibleman among the Greeks.

I was so deeply impressed with the beneficial influence of the "Pioneer Boy" that I could not rest till it was prepared for Greek readers.

The task was a grateful one inasmuch as it was at once Christian

& patriotic; on the one hand, it tells both parents & children of every class that the Bible is the safest guide to prosperity, while on the other, it gives proper information about America. Taking advantage of the text, I have added some foot-notes stasticals & exegetical of American character & institutions, not known in the East & have also added a Supplement wherein I give a brief & comprehensive account of the causes, the prospects & the conduct of the war as well as a discription of the state of the country at the outset, besides a summary of the principal events, accomplished under your administration

Its language is very simple that can be read by children & the price very low in order that even the poorest may purchase, as I most gratefully have given the labour.

A thousand lithographs were ordered to come from the States which came too late to be inserted in the copy I forward to your Excellency.

Please therefore accept a copy of the "Pioneer Boy" as a specimen of the Greek edition, It is accompanied with our prayers, the greatest gift & the only one a Bible man can offer for his country & its President, at times like these.

I remain yr. humble servant

Geo Constantine

March 24th/65

To His Excellency the President of U.S.A.

FREEDOM'S CALL.

No 2.

Spirited. Alla Marcia.

1. As his moun-tain men fol-lowed, un-doubt-ing and bold, O'er hill and o'er desd-ert, through temp-est and cold; So the peo-ple now burst from each fet-ter and thrall, And an-swer with shouting the wild bu-gle call.

2. Oh! speed the bod riders! fling loose ev'ry rein, The race run for free-dom is not run in vain! From mountain and prai-rie, from lake and from se, Ride gal-lant and hopeful, ride fear-less and free!

3. The shades of the fa-thers for free-dom who died, As they rode in the war-storm, ride now at our side; Their great souls shall strengthen our own for the day, And the glance of our lead-er make cer-tain the way.

4. We ride not for hon-ors, am-bi-tion or place, But the wrong to re-dress, and re-deem the disgrace; Not for North or for South, but the best good of all, We fol-low Lincoln and his bu-gle call!

Chorus.

1 Who'll fol-low, who'll follow? The bands gather fast; They who ride with Lincoln In triumph ride at last! Who'll fol-low, who'll fol-low? The bands gather fast; They who ride with Lincoln In triumph ride at last! All who ride with Lincoln In triumph ride at last!

2. Then fol-low, then fol-low, The bands gath-er fast; All who ride with Lincoln In triumph ride at last! Then fol-low, then fol-low, The bands gather fast; All who ride with Lincoln In tri-umph ride at last.

3. Then fol-low, then fol-low, The bands gath-er fast; All who ride with Lincoln In triumph ride at last! Then fol-low, then fol-low, The bands gath-er fast; All who ride with Lincoln In tri-umph ride at last!

3

WE SEE THE BREAK OF DAY.

1. The robber o'er the prairie stalks, and calls the land his own; and they who talk as slav'ry talks are free to talk alone.

2. Oh, watcher on the outer wall, how wears the night away? "I hear the birds of morning call, I see the break of day!"

3. The hands that hold the Sword and Purse ere long shall lose their prey; And they who, blindly wrought the curse, The curse shall sweep away.

4. The land again in peace shall rest, with blood no longer stained; The virgin beauty of the West shall be no more profaned.

5. Then let the idlers stand apart, and cowards shun the fight; We'll band together, heart to heart, forget, forgive, unite!

Chorus

1. But tell the knaves we are not slaves, and slaves we ne'er will be; Come weal or woe, the world shall know we're free, we're free, we're free!

2. Rise, tell the knaves we are not slaves, and slaves we ne'er will be; Come weal or woe, the world shall know we're free, we're free, we're free!

3. Then tell the knaves we are not slaves, and slaves we ne'er will be; Come weal or woe, the world shall know we're free, we're free, we're free!

May 13th 1865

Dear Brother Eddy, for that is the old familiar name. Your kind and welcome letter is received. I am glad, you may be sure, to hear from you again. God Bless you And yours. I enlisted first in the 12th N Y State Millitia for 3 months service, And afterwards served two more short terms in the same regt. And when that was over I enlisted for 3 years in the Cavalry Service of which I have now served nearly two years. I cannot now tell you in detail all that I have passed through during the War. But I have fought the Rebels more than once And the last and hardest fight I had with them previous

to shooting Booth, was on the 24th of June last, I faced and fought against a Whole Column of them, All alone none but God being with me to help me My being in a large field and they being in the Road with a high fence between us enabled me to hold out against them as long as i did. But after driving back some that came out from thier column to take me they finally had the fence torn down And then Closed around me And when my Pistol gave out giving no more fire I was captured by them, And sent to Andersonville Georgia. There God was good to me

sparing my life while only another and myself lived to return out of 14 men who were there of my Own Company. But Bless the Lord a Score of Souls were converted right on the spot where I lay for 3 months without any shelter, And hundreds were converted in that place for many meetings were held in different parts of the Bull Pen.

I was exchanged at Savannah on the 19th of November, Making my Imprisonment 5 months all but 5 days. After being in the Hospital at Annapolis awhile I had a furlough home for 30 days. And then returned to duty with my Regt. I am still with

it and do not know how long I may have to stay. As I did not get my Discharge from the Secretary of War which I asked for After Shooting Booth. The fair of the Sanitary Commission coming off on the 30th at Chicago will have a life size picture of me I expect on Exhibition. They wrote for it and the Revolver with which Booth was shot But that has been stolen from me since And I have only another in place of it. If George Gibson still lives at State St. Albany please send me word I would like to write Mr. and Mrs. Gibson who were so kind to us all.

I have not yet received any part of the Reward. As the trial is occupying all the attention of the Authorities who have the matter in hand.

The corporation of the borough of Kendal, moved by indignation at the foul and treasonable assassination of the late President of the United States, hereby transmit to his excellency Charles Francis Adams, for communication to the American government, the sincere expression of sorrow that the life of the chief ruler of the American people has been sacrilegiously taken at the moment he was designing, by conciliatory and kindly measures, to heal the discord and anarchy that has so grievously afflicted the United States. It will rejoice the corporation of Kendal to learn, in the process of time, that the sanguinary struggle, during which so many precious lives on both sides have been sacrificed, has eventually resulted in freedom to the whole family of man on the North American continent—a consummation necessary to the sacred character of a free constitutional state.
