His Excellency Richard Yates,

Governor of the State of Illinois.

Sir: As an individual State and as a part of the Great West, Wisconsin is anxious, not only to do her full duty in the present struggle for free government but at the same time to do everything in her power for the advancement of her own and the nation's industrial interests.

With this view, I appointed in September last, a Commissioner to represent this state at the Great Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, to be held at London in the year 1862, not doubting that State Commissioners would be recognized by the Royal Commissioners, as in 1851. Finding that this will not be the case, however, and moreover, having discovered by the appointments already made of U.S. Commissioners to make preparations for said exhibition, that the authorities at Washington who have the whole matter in charge are not disposed to recognize the claims of the Northwest to a share either in the making of those arrangements or in the representation at London, I have thought it well that the several states constituting the Northwest should unite in the appoint

ment of a single Commissioner with authority to take such measures as he may deem best to insure a creditable exhibition from this division of our country to represent the states so appointing him, at the London Exhibition, and to make such a report thereof as may best calculated to advance the special industrial interests of those states.

If such action were taken by the Northwestern States, there can be no doubt that it would result in a far more worthy exhibition than they will otherwise make, and in the official recognition and authorization of such Commissioner by the President, in which case the expenses of the proposed Joint Commission would undoubtedly be provided for in the appropriation for which the President intends to ask at the next session of Congress. But if the expenses should not be so provided for, the amount, which need not exceed the sum of two thousand dollars altogether, would be but a trifle for the five or six states represented.

Should the foregoing views meet with your approval, I would ask the favor of nominating as said Joint Commissioner, the appointee of this State, Dr. John W. Hoyt, Sec'y of the Wis. State Agricultural Society, Vice Prest of the U.S. Agricultural Society, &c. In addition to possessing the

highest qualifications for the important duties of the commission, he has, by the official action of your own State Agricultural Society and of the Societies of four other Northwestern States, been made a candidate for the appointment by the President, of Commissioner for the U.S., and is strongly indorsed by numerous officers of Eastern Boards of Agriculture. He has likewise a thorough familiarity with what is necessary to be done in the premises, and if duly authorized will earnestly and at once devote himself to the work of securing to the West an honorable position at the great industrial gathering of the Nations at London.

In conclusion, I may be allowed to suggest that, inasmuch as all articles intended for the Exhibition must be reported to the Royal Commissioners as early as January 1st and ready for shipment from New York by the 28th of February, it is important that whatever is done by the West should be done with the least possible delay.

During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>

Though a stranger to you permit me to address you in behalf of one, my oldest son, who is willing and ready to give his services to his country in this hour of her difficulty and trial. He is disabled by a slight paralysis of his left leg and hand from entering the rank and file of the army, but he is a good scholar and can write with ease and usual rapidity. Has paid attention to Book Keeping and is prepared to fulfil any function of a clerk, paymaster, or commissariat and is desirous of obtaining some such position. He is pure in morals, of strict integrity, and prompt in every

Will you be kind enough to consider his case in the numerous appointments of your department. He* voted for Mr. Lincoln and sustains his measures throughout. As private secretary or confidential agent he would render valuable service.

Is the office of Paymaster in the Regiment about to encamp here yet filled? Or have you any other in which you could give him position? Please inform me what references will be needed, or what steps necessary in order obtain an appointment. Pardon my intrusion. God help our country, give us good deliverance from every enemy, and enable the government to vindicate it own existence its majesty & power. Suppress all

*He reminds me that he would have done it but at the time was in Missouri where he was not entitled to vote.

Dr Sir

Yrs of the 12th came duly to hand with enclosures for which please except the thanks of the young ladies they highly prize the photogs. A short time after the recpt of yrs, I think first or second mail, a letter from our representative Mr Ford addressed to some half a dozen of our neighbors including myself, but superscribed to Mr [Drun?] who probably is better acquainted with Ford than others, was shown by [Drun?] to the rest of us - by the way [Drun?] has been talking Washburns party strong & we were somewhat fearful of his influence through acquaintance with Ford. It had also been hinted that [Drun?] was influenced by

by Capt Allen our Provost-Marshall who is reported opposed to you this is Confidential & I [would?] say it on my own responsibility without better authority than I have the question with us has to get along without any opposition to a full & open expression in your favor knowing that strong influences were being brought to bear in favor of other candidates. By the way the purport of Fords letter was an expression of opinion from his Constituents stating he had recd letters from the 4 candidates, that he had replied to all stating that he should go to Springfield untrammelled & then try to do for the best as he wished the expression. We concluded to call a meeting inviting not only those addressed but a goodly number of others & some from other towns North & South of us - organized by placing Mr [Drun?] in the Chair & moving that Chair appoint a committee of three on resolutions which he did to our satisfaction we having

the resolutions ready in the hands of one of his committee, while out it was suggested that we vote by ballot each one to prepare his own for his choice without any consultations the result was Every ballot but one was for Richd Yates - [Drun?] [presented ?] ballot for Palmer instead of Washburn, the Committee reported & of [course?] resolutions all O.K. Requesting our representative (after tendering him our thanks for his courteous letter) to laber first last & all the time to effect the election of our present Governor Richd Yates to the United States Senate - I had previous to his writing us had acquaintances of him & myself write him in reference to popular feeling which I am confident I am not mistaken is I believe fully that 19/20 of the names are in favor of your election. At the same time we all know that often the wishes of thou many are entirely ignored & popular feeling is not regarded - I see by the [prints?] that strong [currents?] are used & some

very stealthily & still I can hardly believe they can accomplish their ends - with reference to going to Springfield notwithstanding my own satisfactions that I cod not accomplish anything to yr advantage - being an entire stranger to most of the Legislature - I had pretty much concluded to be there & had the assurance of one or two to accompany me from our place but being unfortunate enough to freeze my feet I may be obliged to forgo the pleasure. If so - I shall continue to hope & that sanguinity that you will not fail. but as I before wrote wod prefer there wod be no contest as we bring the matter here if Washburn was out of the way - (although his vote wod be the lightest) - there wod be no question about the result that is if Putnam & Logan both remain in the field - Kewanee paper is out for you & Cambridge I still understand Webster is all right - shall probably see before he goes to S.

Has received Governors letter with enclosures - has received letter from Ford asking an expression of opinion from his constituents as to Senator. they instructed him to labor first last and all the time for the election of Rich Yates. &c &c
