I find nearly all of our people are in favor of yr honor for the Senatorship without any ifs or buts from a positive sense of obligation for yr past public services---although under other circumstances they might have favored one of the other Candidates named. I yesterday recd a letter from Wm Pitt Kellogg making some enquiries about the surroundings here & wishing me to advise you of the facts. Our leading men as I stated are all in favor of yrself that I have conversed with, with one exception & that is on personal grounds. I to day met our Elector J B Burnett of Galva under the circumstances he is unqualifiedly for you <hr /> & also says---Col Stout of Galva who I believe you are personally acquainted with & Olaf Johnson the leader of the Swedes & others at Galva are pledged with their influence to you. Our representative Marcus M Ford who is from Galva is comparatively a newcomer with us. I have a very slight acquaintance with him as he has never been a public character at all but the opposite a very quiet, unassuming man, Burnett says he is uncommitted he will do what he can with him (Ford). Burnett will go to Springfield on Monday & as he (Burnett) will not put himself forward you had better yourself or some friend see him & urge upon him the necessity of setting Ford right---without knowing positively. I think Webster our Senator from Rock Island is all right. It seems to me wrong that we shod have the least contest for the Senatorship this winter & hoped there wod be but one candidate but we must make due allowances <hr /> for the aspirations of all men. our paper will come out with Editorials for you next week unqualifiedly. Still I suppose you are prepared & will expect strong efforts to advance the claims of other aspirants. On account of the position taken by one Senator & Representative. The former had of his own accord assured several who had conferred with him that he sho Support you first and last & Mr Ford had taken a great deal of pains <hr /> to correspond with his constituents in different localities for an expression of their wishes as a guide to him in his final action. But I console myself with the fact as I understand they both admitted before the test at Springield that they went against or Contrary to the wishes of a large Majority of their Constituents. I regretted exceedingly, I could not be at Springfield during the Contest but as I wrote you rec'd a despatch from Philadelphia the Same day you telegraphed Judge Wait to meet a gentleman the second day after & then was necessarily compelled to go East & only returned on Friday last. Smith was an Assistant State Entomologist (1906-1914) and orchardist (1914-1966) in Ozark, Illinois. He was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Fruit Belt Service Company, Federal Land Bank of St. Louis, Illinois Horticultural Society, and the Ozark Public School. He was instrumental in the development of the University of Illinois Extension Service experimental farms in Johnson County.  Smith married Grace Selby of Bartlett, Ohio on December 28, 1906. Together they operated a three hundred acre apple and peach orchard and raised a family of eight boys and two girls. A daughter, Alice Elisabeth (Betty) Smith (1913-1973), graduated from the University of Illinois (B.S. degree in Home Economics) in 1937 and the University of Colorado (M.A. degree in Home Economics) in 1943; taught home economics in the Crete Public schools (1937-1943); served as a University Home Demonstration Agent (1943-1947), and worked as Assistant State Girls’ 4-H Club Leader with the University of Iowa at Ames (1947-1954). Betty completed a series of home economics overseas assignments through the Agency for International Development in the United States State Department that took her to the Philippines (1955-1957), Iran (1957-1961), Morocco (1962-1963), Nigeria (1963-1966), and Southern Vietnam (1967-1970). She returned to Iowa in 1970 to serve as Extension Home Economist and Head of the Extended Nutrition Program in Des Moines. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Circuit Court (3rd Circuit) Davis, Sarah Woodruff Walker, 1814-1879 Davis, Sarah W., 1852-1934 Description An account of the resource David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.  Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice. John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart. Heaton worked as a political cartoonist for several Chicago-based newspapers including the Chicago Daily Tribune (1885-1899) and the Inter-Ocean (1908-1914). While working for the Chicago Daily Tribune he created a series of weekly commentaries on the World's Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893. Heaton's political cartoons featured current events, frequently focusing on Chicago politics. Heaton took a break from cartoon work in 1899 to work as an actor and playwright before returning to the newspaper business in 1908. Two insurgents in Kansas claim "Alas! Poor Cannon! I knew him well" in front of a newspaper with the headline "Kansas Cans Cannon-ism". Republican Joseph Gurney Cannon, the fortieth Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1903-1911), welded massive control over house rules as Chairman of the Rules Committee and had unlimited power to appoint people to all house committees. Cannon used his exceptional powers to control the divergent sects in the Republican party in the early nineteen hundreds, thereby appointing only conservative minded committeemen and undermining the progressive Republicans.
