Title A name given to the resource William Rayburn Collection Subject The topic of the resource Rayburn, William H., 1836-1930 Evangelists Clergy Description An account of the resource William Rayburn was the founder of a religious sect that traces its beginnings to Williamsville, Illinois. Rayburn was a married minister in the Methodist Church in Williamsville in the 1860s when he abandoned his family and had an open relationship with another woman. After the Methodist Church deposed Rayburn, he began preaching his own doctrine and building a group of followers including Reverend C. A. Obenshain, the man the Methodist Church sent to Williamsville to speak against Rayburn.  Rayburn and Obenshain established their sect's headquarters but were not accepted by the local residents. Raybern and Obenshain promoted their beliefs locally and nationally, receiving attention from the New York Times in 1883 for their ceremonies revolving around promiscuity. In 1893 Rayburn built a large memorial to "Mattie S. Rayburn" in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, which has led to confusion over the identity of the woman buried there and whether she was his wife or his companion. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. His huge collection of Lincolniana became the foundation of the Illinois State Historical Library and its successor institution, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. Supreme Court Judges Antislavery movements Trumbull, Julia Maria Jayne, 1824-1868 Politicians' spouses Description An account of the resource Lyman Trumbull was born in Colchester, Connecticut on October 12, 1813, to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Mather) Trumbull. In 1837 he moved to Belleville, Illinois, and won election to the state legislature as a Democrat in 1840.  Trumbull was appointed Secretary of State from 1841-1842 and later a justice of the State Supreme Court from 1848-1853.  As an opponent of slavery Trumbull joined the Republican Party in 1854 and ran successfully against Abraham Lincoln to become a United States Senator from Illinois. Trumbull remained in the United States Senate until 1873 after which he resumed practice of law in Chicago. In 1880 he tried as a Democrat for Governor of Illinois but was unsuccessful.                        While in the United States Senate he favored new bills opposing black slavery, passing a bill ending slavery in District of Columbia, which was amended, allowing blacks to testify in federal court and supported a bill which forbade the use of the Union Army to return runaway slaves to their owners.  In 1864, Trumbull worked with another senator to create the Freedman’s Bureau to help blacks with housing and, later, education.  He also voted for the first reconstruction act that created a new voters list that included African Americans.   Trumbull’s most prominent legislative achievement was his proposal of the 13th Amendment originally written by Senator John Henderson.  The 13th Amendment amended the United States Constitution so that slavery and servitude was illegal and it gave Congress the power to enforce it.  Trumbull was also a leading supporter of the 1866 Civil Rights Bill that was designed to protect freed slaves form Southern Black Codes. Trumbull was one of seven Republicans who broke party ranks and voted against the conviction of President Johnson during his impeachment trial in the Senate. In 1872 he joined other Liberal Republicans in supporting Horace Greeley’s presidential candidacy against the reelection of President Grant. He married Julia Jayne (d. Aug. 16, 1868) in June of 1843 and they had four children. Julia Jayne served as a bridesmaid at Abraham and Mary Lincoln's wedding. His second marriage was to Mary Ingraham, on November 3, 1877, with whom he had two daughters, Alma and Mae. Only one son survived Trumbull in death.  He died June 25, 1896 in Chicago. Judge Fort of Lacon (you probably know him) came down with me, he and our representative to the Legislature with two wild fire eaters from the very blackest part of the South went with me or I with them to see "Old Abe" - A nigger came to the door and showed us in. "Abe" who, seated beside a huge pile of letters as high as a mountain (I presume all from [ours?] after office) rose and welcomed us with a good jolly shake hands. We stayed about half an hour, during all of which the old fellow went on talking so that one of us could hardly get a word in edge ways. I think he almost converted the "fire eaters" into Black Republicans. however their opinion of him was very much altered. You would explode with laughter to hear him tell about the southerners trying to assassinate him. He has got stacks of preserved fruit and all sorts of such trash which he is daily receiving from various parts of the South sent to him as presents. He had several packages opened and examined by medical men who found them to be all poisoned. Not time to write more this evening. Will likely go to Jacksonville the first of next week. Circuit Court (3rd Circuit) Davis, Sarah Woodruff Walker, 1814-1879 Davis, Sarah W., 1852-1934 Description An account of the resource David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. House of Representatives Photographers Description An account of the resource Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure.
