House of Representatives Description An account of the resource The Buckmaster-Curran Collection features early Illinois families descended from Colonel John Durkee of Norwich, Connecticut, who fought in the Revolutionary War. His daughter Anna Durkee first married Dr. Dominic Tauzin, with whom she had a daughter, Mary Harriott Tauzin. Mary Tauzin married Daniel Bartling, a lieutenant in the War of 1812. Mary died in 1809 and Anna was responsible for the care of her two grandchildren, Henry and Harriet. In 1817 she, along with the children, came to Illinois and settled in Madison County. In 1832 Harriet Bartling married Nathaniel Buckmaster, a brick maker by trade, who had first come to Illinois in 1817. He served as a state representative in 1820-1822, and again, 1834-1836. He was elected Madison County sheriff in 1821 and served several consecutive terms. He was appointed Colonel in the Illinois militia in 1828 and commanded a battalion in the Black Hawk War. He was postmaster at Alton, 1838-1841 and warden at the Illinois State Penitentiary, 1842-1846. Buckmaster owned property in Madison County and operated the Madison County Ferry across the Mississippi. Nathaniel and Harriet Buckmasters’s daughter, Catherine Buckmaster married Isaac Bush Curran, Sr.. Curran was born in Ithaca, New York, and worked as a jeweler when he came to Illinois in 1840. He was active in Democratic politics and was appointed Pension Agent for Illinois by President Buchanan from 1853-1858. He was private secretary and chief of staff for Governor Joel Matteson. Catherine and Isaac had two sons, Isaac B. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Circuit Court (3rd Circuit) Davis, Sarah Woodruff Walker, 1814-1879 Davis, Sarah W., 1852-1934 Description An account of the resource David Davis, a lawyer, politician, distinguished jurist and businessman, was born in Maryland, educated at Kenyon College in Ohio, and studied law at Yale University. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Burkhalter moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania in 1856. In 1858 he married Martha Ellen Adle in Galesburg and began raising a family. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Burkhalter wrote Governor Richard Yates for a commission and successfully formed Company F of the Eighty-Sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Joining as a private, Burkhalter was elected commanding officer with the rank of captain and served throughout the war, ending his tenure as a major with General William Tecumseh Sherman, well on his march to the sea.
