During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library. After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975. From one I learn that there is an effort making in the regiment to have the vacancy of the Cols position filled by one of the officers that are now with the Regiment. It may be none of my business, but such vacancy being filled whilst the Lt. Co., Major and the greater part of the line officers are suffering in Libby prison. I think it an act of great injustice to say the least. I beleive it is said to be understood that whoever gets the appointment shall resign immedeately on the release of the officers that are in Libby. But it dont seeme right to me that Lt. Col. Rodgers should be cheated out of nearly a years salary as Col simply because he through no fault of his is a prisoner and some Skulking Officer who knows nothing of hardships past present and prospective <hr /> endured and to be endured by the officers and men composing the ill Starred expedition of Col. Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis. In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago. In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. Granville April 4 1864 Hon R Yates Dear Sir on consultation with a number of our most active reliable unconditioned union men in this county it is the decided opinion of all that it is best to have no Election called to fill the vacancy in congress of this the 5th congressional district ocasioned by the death of the Hon Owen Lovejoy but let it go till our Election next Fall Should a election be ordered the member could not be elected to get there much before the adgournment of the present session so that we are of the opinion that no binefit would arise from such a election. I feel that is a matter of importance to select a man of talent and a man that has proved himself to be on the side of the union from the commencemet of the rebellion I don't want to trust a war democrat for in voting the war <hr /> democrats and the coperheads are apt to vote together hence we want time to consult with the reliable union men in the district and have a understanding who we will unite on We had a triad of war democrats in our last legislature which I think aught to satisfy all that it wont do to trust them I make the sugestion of not having a Election - to fill the vacancy for your consideration Hoping you will not consider it as dictating to you on the subject One other Sugestion as to the comisioning field officers in the 4th Caverly I wrote you a short time since on the subject in detail I see by the law that you are empowered to comision to fill vacancys with whome you think proper I will state that should there be a vacancy to fill in the field officer ether Major or Lt Col that if you will take the responcibility to comision Captain Henry D Cook of company G it will meet the Harty approbation of nearly evry company officer and ninetenths of the soldiers over <hr /> This I write in confidinc The field officers are mostly the favaurits of Col [Deckey?] not Selected I think with an eye to there fitness for the post but ware his favauritts and for that reason ware selected I would not say so much I only felt a great interest in the regiment and that I can talk to you frankly on the subject and that you will not take it as a intrusion on my parte very Respectfuly your [illegible] Andw Wardlaw <hr /> Wardlaw, Andrew Granville.
