(Ephraim Samuel), 1824-1896 Description An account of the resource Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a major American poet, was born in 1879 at 603 South Fifth Street in Springfield, Illinois to Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Catherine Frazee Lindsay. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Elizabeth Graham, friend of Lindsay, was a founding member and curator of the Lindsay Home from 1958 to 1978. Octavia Roberts attended St. Agatha’s Episcopal School in Springfield. She worked as a reporter for the Illinois State Journal prior to her marriage to attorney Barton Corneau in 1913. A former Springfield resident, Corneau was the son of W.B. Corneau, former treasurer of the Wabash Railroad. Barton and Octavia Corneau resided in Boston, Massachusetts, and Ogunquit, Maine. After her marriage, Octavia Roberts Corneau authored several books, both published and unpublished. Her published works include My Lady Valentine (ca. 1916); Lincoln in Illinois (1918); With Lafayette in America (1919); and The Perilous Isle (1926). Some of her unpublished works include “The Road of Remembrance” [Springfield in the late 19th and early 20th centuries]; “The Governor’s Mansion, (1853-1953), A Social History of the Illinois Executive Mansion”; and “’Little Occie’, as seen in the Journals of her Sister, Ann Ridgely.” Octavia Roberts Corneau died on March 14, 1972, in Ogunquit, Maine, at the age of 96.   The Corneau-Roberts Family Collection contains related images to the Octavia Roberts Collection. The program provided funding for music festivals, classes, and concerts as well as the creation of 34 orchestras. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. (Frank Parsons), 1863-1939 Physicians Mental health Illinois--Jacksonville Sanatoriums Description An account of the resource Dr. Frank Parsons Norbury was the founder of the Norbury Sanatorium in Jacksonville, Illinois. Norbury began his medical career as an assistant physician at the Illinois Central Hospital for the Insane (now the Jacksonville State Hospital) in 1888. In 1893 he moved with his family to Iowa where he set up a private practice and began lecturing at the Keokuk Medical College (now part of Drake University). He briefly practiced medicine in St. Louis before returning to Jacksonville in 1896 where he worked as an attending physician Oaklawn Retreat and the Illinois School for the Blind. Norbury established the Norbury Sanatorium in Jacksonville in 1900 which specialized in neuropsychiatric illnesses. The sanatorium's directors were Norbury, Dr. Albert H. Dollear, and Norbury's son, Dr. Frank Garm Norbury. Dr. Norbury served as Superintendent of the Kankakee State Hospital from 1909-1911. He was appointed Alienist by the Illinois State Board of Administration to supervise clinical care of all institutionalized mental patients in Illinois from 1911-1913. During World War I Norbury was the Acting Medical Director of the National Committee of Mental Hygiene which was responsible for selection of personnel for the nervous disease department. He also served as President of the Illinois Board of Welfare Commissioners, appointed by Governor Frank Lowden from 1917-1921. Lucas Collection Description An account of the resource Scott Wike Lucas was an Illinois attorney and politician. Born in Cass County, Illinois, on February 19, 1892, Lucas attended public schools and Illinois Wesleyan University, where he played baseball and other college sports. While in college, during his summers, he played baseball in the Three-I League, a semiprofessional baseball league organized in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. After college, Lucas attended law school and was admitted to the bar in 1915. Lucas served in the United States Army during World War I, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He would later continue his military association by serving as commander of the Illinois Department of the American Legion. After serving as state's attorney for Mason County in the 1920s, Lucas ran in the 1932 Democratic primary as a candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois; however, he lost his primary bid to William H. Dieterich. Governor Henry Horner then appointed Lucas chairman of the State Tax Commission, which Lucas directed from 1933 to 1935. In 1934, Lucas won election to the United States House of Representatives from Illinois. Four years later, he won election to the U.S. Senate and was reelected in 1944. Following President Harry S. Truman's reelection in 1948, Lucas became Senate Majority Leader. He served in that capacity only two years, losing the 1950 general election in Illinois to Republican Everett Dirksen. Lucas died on February 22, 1968. The Scott W. Lucas Collection consists of 38 photographs from Lucas' early life and political career. In addition to images of such influential American politicians as John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, the collection contains several political cartoons satirizing Lucas and other politicians. President Harry S. Truman nominated Howell as a judge on the United States Court of Claims in 1947. Howell remained in this position until resigning in 1953. He went on to serve on the Illinois State Toll Highway Commission before resigning to return to practicing private law.
