The first issues the unions dealt with were pay, working hours and conditions. After the unions became more established they worked for more long term concerns such as old age pensions, mortuary benefits and paid sick time. The unions also worked to start an apprentice program. In 1915 the Springfield local voted to make the term of apprenticeship five years, with pay of $5.00 per week the first year. Apprentices had to qualify by having their grammar, spelling and other academic skills tested, to assure that their work on the linotype or teletype setters would produce accurate results. The Woman’s Auxiliary of the ITU was formed in 1902 to raise awareness of union products, the union label, and to raise funds for the Printer’s Retirement Home or to help families of members during hard times. Jacksonville’s union joined No. 177 in 1897. It was not until 1971 that Taylorville joined. Then Decatur merged with the Springfield union in 1975, Quincy in 1976 and Danville in 1978. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. Hamilton Lewis. He won reelection in 1942. While serving in the United States Senate, Brooks married his second wife, Mary Thomas Peavey, who served as director of the United States Mint from 1969-1977. After finishing school, he moved Chicago to live and practice law. He became interested in constitutional revision in the 1940’s and worked diligently for it, pleading before the Illinois Senate Executive Committee in 1947 and the House of Representatives in 1949. He was actively involved in getting the 1950 “Gateway Amendment” passed which made it easier to amend the constitution. He was the state chairman for the Committee for Constitutional Revision from 1950-1957. Witwer ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1960, losing to Paul H. Douglas. In 1968 when the voters favored a constitution convention, Witwer was elected as a delegate and then chosen by a 109 to 0 vote of delegates to act as its president. The convention succeeded in drafting a new constitution which was then passed by a large majority of the voters. Witwer was also involved in civic organizations in Chicago. He was a director of the Chicago Urban League, the Citizens for a Greater Chicago and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. He was a member of the Chicago Union League Club, which gave him an award in 1954 for civic service. The magazine Chicago recognized him as one of the “five builders of Chicago” in 1954 and the Church Federation of Greater Chicago selected him as “one of three Chicago laymen of the year” in 1956. Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
