Should the Legislature pass the "Militia Bill," it will, of course, repeal out of office the whole existing Staff. If this should be your view, I would much like to receive the appointment, upon the new Staff of Your Exly
of Inspector General, the duties of which, I think, I could (& would,) faithfully fulfill. I would, however, accept any other post of equivalent rank, which it might be your pleasure to assign me -

I want to be in the service, but do not wish to stand in anybody's way - This suggestion is based upon a conversation which you will probably remember

Dear Sir: If I can properly appreciate your position, the shorter the letters you receive the better - I will not bore you -

Dear Sir. My apology for addressing you is this. I am a minister of the gospel and desire an apointment in the army as chaplain. I should be very grateful for your assistance in procuring the same. The most that I can say of myself is, that I am tolerably obscure, and am perhaps as unpopular as any poor minister would wish to be. This arises I think from the fact that I have not been a sympathiser with the dominant party in politics in this region. I am not a politician never having cast but two votes for president (and I am over forty years of age) but because I have been known to be

a Republican, I have had to endure an amount of prejudice you can scarcely conceive of. My desire is to do good but I feel that I can accomplish nothing here. I desire now to try what I can do in the army.

Although I have not been so fortunate as to make your acquaintance, yet I have had the pleasure of hearing you speak. I heard you make a speech in Chester in this State in 1854, and had the pleasure of casting my vote for you for a seat in Congress at the ensuing election. I was at that time pastor of the Baptist church in that place.

I refer you to our mutual friend Dr. D. Arter of this place. And to D L Philips of Anna. Yours truly. M.B Kelly

manifested itself right in our midst. Quite a number among us are at heart, the enemies of the Federal Government - and only want the power to enable them to turn the whole North into the hands of the enemies of this Government. There are in this village those who would, I verily believe, if they were not
afraid, lead on a band of secessionists from the South, and rejoice in seeing them subjugate us - and visit the Chains of Slavery on our necks. One of the old posts in the Democratic party has been heard to say that "the volenteers from this Co. were cowards, and that hoped they every one get what they deserved before they return". His wife has said that "She hoped to God the South would kill every one of them" - and his little son has frequently said the same thing - which certainly reflects the sentiments of the head of the family. This same old man has said within the last five days that he could command the force in three days to take the Town of Mason, and that Republicans had better mind how they talk about traitors.

These things he has said to his supposed confidential friends - He has not said them publicly. And it is my deliberate opinion that he speaks the sentiments of not less than from six to ten men within five miles of this place. And many more are of the same opinion with me. In Clay County I learn there are a good many secessionists who are clamorours in favor of the South. And farther south in Egypt, I have every reason to belive that there are many who will fight for the South in the event fighting has to be done on the border. And since our volenteers left here on Tuesday last, we have commenced making up a company of minute men - to be called the Mason minute guards - and a certain man in this vicinity has said as soon as the Company was made up and left here, he'd bring in a company to Rob & plunder ever "Black Republican" that was left behind. These things look hard: but they are true. In such a crisis as the present, these men are dangerous to the communities in which they live. In the present emergency, it seems to me that effective legislative means should be provided for the prompt surpression of every thing that would tend to encourage disloyalty in our midst, & invite the invasion our free territoy in Ills. by an armed body of rebbells. He informed me that he was in Jackson Tenesee yesterday and heard Judge Milton Brown of that place address the citizens - that the tenor of the address, was that every man should enlist and march at once with the view of taking Cairo - that he stired up the greatest enthusiasm & that he had but little doubt, but that an armed force quite formidable would be thrown against Cairo. He also stated that they were wanting armes & that every means will be resorted to, to procure them - I have but little doubt of their intention upon Cairo - they must have provisions & to obtain them, they must have this point - This
point & Washington may be the great battle grounds. Hon H W Blodgett from Lake will tell you who I am -

Dr Sir On my way this morn from Centralia I fell in co with Hon G Y Atkison a member of the Legislature of Indiana.
