Dear Sir

Disappointed, in Consequence of the refusal of Col. Richardson to accept the position of Brig: Gen: tendered him by the President, in receiving a good place in the Army and determined to contribute my mite in aid of the cause to all of us most dear, within the last few weeks, I joined the 43rd Reg Ill Vol at Chicago and am now a Recruit at this place. Since being here I am led to believe there is a probability of my obtaining an appointment from Washington and desire that a sufficient amount of influence may be exerted, in addition to that already tendered, to render the object secure.

My dear Sir -

I recently wrote a letter of censure to you, with heart-felt sincerity, (the only way that Jo. Knox ever writes a letter) but since I wrote it, I have known more & better of you. I'll tell you how I acquired my knowledge. I have just recd a letter from my more than "well beloved son" George, of Capt. Silversparre's Battery at Pittsburg Landing, in which he speaks of your kind & condescending notice of him on that bloody battle field & invitation to call in the eve'g at your quarters. For that, Governor, my heart gushes its warmest thanks. I may copy our Saviours language & say to you, "whosoever doeth it to me of the least of these (my babies) doeth it unto me". Yates,

let by gones, be by gones. "Let the dead bury their dead". Talk enough about the past - but Governor, may you live forever for your kind notice of my good boy, so far from home. And when you die, (& may not that occur 'till after I have gone) may George & I & all our family be able to say of you that tho' Gov. Yates has left us - gone - yet he has not fallen - for swinging out into an infiinty under orbit, he has circled up to Heaven's Eternal throne, where now, all temporal & material

"Stars are but the shining dust of his divine abode,

The pavement of those Heavenly Courts, where he shall reign with God".

I have thus refered to my standing in our profession with more of frankness than I should venture to adopt under other circumstances

- have been induced so to do under the imprefsion that at this time we have not any board of examination in session & that my papers together with a conversation with some of your medical friends would be satisfactory to you

I have choosen to address my offer of Services to yourself under the impression that under our volunteer system that the Governor's of states are permitted to manage the volunteer Corps as they may deem best with but little interference upon the part of General government

Dear Sir= The Island of Rock Island (of which I am agent of the Q. M. Dept.) is just the place to send a thousand rebel prisoners. It is healthy, and in every respect well adapted for the purpose. A portion of the buildings of Fort Armstrong are still standing. The quarters for officers are in a good state of preservation and capable of accommodating a guard of fifty men. All that would be necessary to make it the finest spot in the North for keeping prisoners is the necessary barrack room, and the material of Camps McClellan and Holt, not now in use could be obtained and every put in good shape for the reception of the secesh within a week after the order came for it to be done. Not knowing the proper person to address on the subject I thought best to drop you a line, and if not within your province, you will oblige me by having the subject brought to the attention of the proper authorities, either by a note from yourself or the forwarding of this letter.

Yours truly,

Heon. Richard Yates:

T. J. Pickett.
