Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. (Herman Henry), 1853-1924 Illinois--Chicago Newspaper editors Republican Party (U.S. : 1854- ) Newspapers--Ownership Newspapers McKinley, William, 1843-1901 Presidents--Election Political campaigns Description An account of the resource Herman Henry Kohlsaat was born March 22, 1853 in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois, one of six children of Reimer and Sarah (Hall) Kohlsaat. Reimer and Sarah Kohlsaat were abolitionists whose home was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. The Kohlsaat family moved to Galena, Illinois, in 1854 until moving to Chicago in 1865. He became a travelling salesman, eventually working for Blake, Shaw and Company, a wholesale bakery owned by R. Nelson Blake, who was to become Kohlsaat’s father-in-law. In 1880 Kohlsaat married Mabel E. Blake and became a junior partner of Blake, Shaw and Company in charge of a bakery-lunch establishment in the city. In 1883 he brought out Blake, Shaw and Company’s interest in the establishment and started H.H. Kohlsaat and Company, which for about thirty years was one of the largest baking establishments in Chicago. He opened several lunch stores which drew a good patronage from the businessmen of the Loop district. In 1888 Kohlsaat was an alternate delegate at the Republican national convention held in Chicago. He became an early supporter of William McKinley, then Governor of Ohio, working for his nomination and election to the presidency in 1896. Kohlsaat was a friend, confidant and advisor of five United States Presidents: McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Harding.  In 1891, Kohlsaat purchased a half-interest in the Chicago newspaper Inter-Ocean. In 1894 Kohlsaat abandoned his interest in the Inter-Ocean, and purchased the Chicago Times-Herald and the Evening Post. He converted the papers from Democratic to independent Republican organs. His influence in the Republican Party helped draft the gold-standards plank during the 1896 convention in St. Louis. McKinley’s ensuing campaign for the presidency against free silverite William Jennings Bryan was ultimately won on the gold standard issues.  In 1901 Kohlsaat purchased the Chicago Record from Victor F. Lawson and combined it with the Times-Herald, naming the new paper the Record-Herald. Kohlsaat resigned the editorship of the Record-Herald for a time to devote himself to his real estate interests, but later regained control in 1910. He remained editor of the Record-Herald for two years, and then he returned to edit the Inter-Ocean. Kohlsaat left the Inter-Ocean after a year and became a member of the staff of New York Times. Kohlsaat died October 17, 1924, in Washington, D.C., at the home of Herbert Hoover. Cannon was born in Guilford, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Horace Cannon and Gulielma Hollingsworth Cannon.  After the death of his father in 1851, Joseph went to work in a pottery in Annapolis, Indiana. While working as a clerk in a store he met John F. Usher, a lawyer, who agreed to let Cannon read the law under him and work as a clerk in his office.  Cannon attended law school at the University of Cincinnati, earning his diploma in six months. After attempting to set up practice in Shelbyville, Illinois with little luck, he moved to Tuscola where he worked the circuit. Cannon was elected state’s attorney in 1861, holding the position until 1868. In 1862 he married Mary Reed, from Ohio, who had come to Illinois to live with her brother and teach school. The Cannons moved to Danville, Illinois, in 1876.   Cannon sucessfully ran for Congress as a Republican in 1872, beginning what would become a 46 year career in the United States House of Representatives.  During his time in the House of Representatives Cannon served on the Committee on Appropriations, eventually becoming chairman, and the Committee on Rules. Cannon served as the chairman of the Committee on Rules and as Speaker concurrently, allowing him to determine committee chairmanships and members as well as what bills would reach the floor of the House. Cannon lost this power in 1910 after a Democrat-led revolt. Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe," rose in the Republican Party, becoming Speaker of the House from 1903-1910. Cannon is the second-longest serving Speaker of the House and was the first member of the House to pass 40 years of service (non-consecutive). Cannon lost two elections during his career in the House of Representatives (1890 and 1912) but he regained his seat in the following elections each time. Cannon retired from the House of Representatives in 1923 at the age of eighty-six. He and his wife had two daughters, Mabel and Helen. Mary, or Molly as Cannon called her, died in 1899.  Cannon died in 1926. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. House of Representatives American Civil War (1861-1865) Illinois Description An account of the resource Richard Yates, Sr., served as Illinois' thirteenth governor from 1861 through 1865. Prior to serving as governor, Yates was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1851-1855.  During his time as governor, Yates, who was anti-slavery, was active in recruiting troops for the Union Army. After finishing his term as governor in 1865, Yates won election to the United States Senate where he served one term, leaving office in 1871. After leaving office, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Yates to serve as a United States commissioner inspecting a land subsidy railroad in St. Louis. His son, Richard Yates, Jr., also served as Illinois governor from 1901-1905 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1919-1933. Mrs. Herrick was born Alice Reasoner to Colonel Mathew A. Reasoner (1875-1947) and his wife Mabel (Milnor) Reasoner (1877-1964) in Alton, Illinois. General Herrick was born in North Dakota and served his professional career as an officer in the United States Army from 1931 to 1967. The Herricks are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. The collection contains photographs from Mrs. Harrick's family collection;however, most of the images are from General Herrick's military service. Title A name given to the resource Orendorff Family Collection Subject The topic of the resource Families Orendorff, Christian Orendorff, William J., 1829-1897 Orendorff, Alfred, 1845-1909 Description An account of the resource The Orendorff Family Collection follows the descendents of pre-Revolutionary war German immigrant, Christian Orendorff.  Christian Orendorff, a German immigrant, fought in the Revolutionary War as a Captain in the First Regiment, Maryland Continental Line.  Alfred (1845-1909), the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Orendorff, married Julia Williams (1850-1908) in June 1870 and had three children: John born 1871, Alice born 1872, and Lydia Edna born 1885. Alfred was an associate with Herndon and Zane and later a partner in Herndon and Orendorff.  He won election to the Illinois General Assembly in 1873.  He served as Chairman of the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party and was a frequent delegate to the national convention.  He was president of the Sterling Life Insurance Company of Springfield, president of the International Bank and Trust Co. of Vinita, Indian Territory; president of the Sangamon County Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association; and a director of the Illinois State Historical Society.   Alfred's son John married Maebelle Culver in 1903, and was the secretary of the Bank and Trust Company of Tishomingo, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, and worked at the Tishomingo Electric Light and Power Company.  Alice never married but was involved with the Orendorff Place Improvements Association and secretary for the Women’s Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church.  Edna worked at the Illinois State Historical Library as an assistant doing genealogical research.  She married John Francis Macpherson in 1911 and they had two children, Julia born in 1913 and John Francis born in 1916.   W. J. Orendorff (1829-1897) was the son of John and Margaret Sayle Orendorff who came to Illinois in 1818 and settled near what is now Canton.  In 1850 W. J. went into partnership with his sister Caroline’s husband, William Parlin, manufacturing and selling plows.  In 1856 W. J. married Mary Rohrer and they had four children.  He represented his district, as a Republican, in the General Assembly from 1884 to 1886.  W.J. wrote a book of family history and attempted to get it published.  W. J. died in 1897 as a result of an accident with a team of runaway horses.  Ulysses Grant Orendorff (1865-1943), his son, became the Secretary Treasurer of Parlin & Orendorff and remained with the company until it was bought by International Harvester in 1918.
