Cannon was born in Guilford, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Horace Cannon and Gulielma Hollingsworth Cannon.  After the death of his father in 1851, Joseph went to work in a pottery in Annapolis, Indiana. While working as a clerk in a store he met John F. Usher, a lawyer, who agreed to let Cannon read the law under him and work as a clerk in his office.  Cannon attended law school at the University of Cincinnati, earning his diploma in six months. After attempting to set up practice in Shelbyville, Illinois with little luck, he moved to Tuscola where he worked the circuit. Cannon was elected state’s attorney in 1861, holding the position until 1868. In 1862 he married Mary Reed, from Ohio, who had come to Illinois to live with her brother and teach school. The Cannons moved to Danville, Illinois, in 1876.   Cannon sucessfully ran for Congress as a Republican in 1872, beginning what would become a 46 year career in the United States House of Representatives.  During his time in the House of Representatives Cannon served on the Committee on Appropriations, eventually becoming chairman, and the Committee on Rules. Cannon served as the chairman of the Committee on Rules and as Speaker concurrently, allowing him to determine committee chairmanships and members as well as what bills would reach the floor of the House. Cannon lost this power in 1910 after a Democrat-led revolt. Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe," rose in the Republican Party, becoming Speaker of the House from 1903-1910. Cannon is the second-longest serving Speaker of the House and was the first member of the House to pass 40 years of service (non-consecutive). Cannon lost two elections during his career in the House of Representatives (1890 and 1912) but he regained his seat in the following elections each time. Cannon retired from the House of Representatives in 1923 at the age of eighty-six. He and his wife had two daughters, Mabel and Helen. Mary, or Molly as Cannon called her, died in 1899.  Cannon died in 1926. Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Photographs in this collection include images of the Herdman family with a high number of images featuring the families of Henrietta Doud, Grace Harris, Ellen Gowenlock, and Octavia Huff. Recreating a scene of early settler days are Park Ridge's Len Dressler and Mrs. John Carroll of Springfield, singing the century-old folk song, "El-A-Noy." Illinois Sings also travels to the sylvan beauty of Morton Arboretum to salute the strong immigrants who brought their proud cultures here. Gay old-world costumes contrast the Arboretum greens as the Guilford High School Swedish Folk Dancers from Rockford and Chicago ethnic groups with German, Polish and Irish cultures perform national dances. Judy Birr, Chicago's Luther High School North, sings "Wiegenlied" (Brahm's Lullaby) in German. <hr /> Chicago was "open house to the world" during the 1893 Columbian Exposition--today landmarked by the Museum of Science and Industry, the remaining building from the fair and "stage set" for (left) the Clef Dwellers of Quincy High School's "Gay '90s Medley." The showboat also had its day in Illinois. Step aboard as the Louisiana Brass--a six-man Dixieland band from New Trier High School, Winnetka (right)--play "That's A Plenty." Illinois' role in wars is a proud part of its history. The Civil War's "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" is played smartly by the 88-student Richwoods High School Band of Peoria. And you've never heard "Anchors Aweigh" carried off better than the version by the Blue-jacket Choir of Great Lakes (left). <hr /> Today in Illinois is as exciting as its history. Pretty Lucie Cook (above) of Table Grove's V.I.T. Community High School sings "A Wonderful Day Like Today" as she enjoys the rides at Western Illinois County Fairgrounds in Griggsville. Swinging along the girders of a high rise, Robert Aseltine, Glenbard East High School of Lombard, sings "Before The Parade Passes By." Ralph Bellamy, distinguished for his stage, screen, television and radio performances, began his acting career with a young group that played in Chicago-area schools, churches, theatres, tents and any other place which would hold an audience. Throughout its 150-year history, Illinois has attracted rugged pioneers. Recreating a scene of early settler days are Park Ridge's Len Dressler and Mrs. John Carroll of Springfield, singing the century-old folk song, "El-A-Noy." Illinois Sings also travels to the sylvan beauty of Morton Arboretum to salute the strong immigrants who brought their proud cultures here. Gay old-world costumes contrast the Arboretum greens as the Guilford High School Swedish Folk Dancers from Rockford and Chicago ethnic groups with German, Polish and Irish cultures perform national dances. Judy Birr, Chicago's Luther High School North, sings "Wiegenlied" (Brahm's Lullaby) in German. <hr /> Chicago was "open house to the world" during the 1893 Columbian Exposition--today landmarked by the Museum of Science and Industry, the remaining building from the fair and "stage set" for (left) the Clef Dwellers of Quincy High School's "Gay '90s Medley." The showboat also had its day in Illinois. Step aboard as the Louisiana Brass--a six-man Dixieland band from New Trier High School, Winnetka (right)--play "That's A Plenty." Illinois' role in wars is a proud part of its history. The Civil War's "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" is played smartly by the 88-student Richwoods High School Band of Peoria. And you've never heard "Anchors Aweigh" carried off better than the version by the Blue-jacket Choir of Great Lakes (left). <hr /> Today in Illinois is as exciting as its history. Pretty Lucie Cook (above) of Table Grove's V.I.T. Community High School sings "A Wonderful Day Like Today" as she enjoys the rides at Western Illinois County Fairgrounds in Griggsville.
