Dear Sir

Once more I take the Liberty of Writing a few lines to you hoping you will do for me all you can.

Allow me Colonel, if you will not deem me presuming to much, to give you a true and correct history of my case. As you well aware I enlisted last winter as a Private in my old company again, was stationed 4 months as Clerk at General Whites Head Quarters, and recieved on the 24th day of May 1864 from His Excell: Gov Yates my commission as Captain of my old Company back again. I started imediatly for my co., took command of my company as you will see by enclosing orders, went trough several fights with them. I applied afterwards by Gen. Smith for muster, he ordered my muster, but mustering Officer would not must me, on account of smallness of Co. Afterwards I applied to be relieved from my comand, General Smith ordered me to report to Adjt. General for instructions, I done so. I came back to Springfield, reported, and Gen: Fuller told me himself, that I should go home to Chicago, and stay there, untill he could fix something about my case. I done strictly according to his Orders. Last Friday Colonel, I was arrested at my home as a deserter and locked up amongst Thieves, and Bountyjumpers at Camp Douglas; when I am innocent, and done strictly according to my Orders. - It is hard Colonel, a young man like myself, a man who served his adopted Country faithful as a Soldier and Officer for the last (4) four years to be locked up, amongst Deserters, when I done nothing, only what I am ordered do to, and probaly Adjt. Gen: Fuller

If you cant do anything else, please procure my release, trough the Governor", before Wuenesday; and I'll come to Springfield myself. - Then I done according to my orders.

by neglecting my case, I have to suffer here. I have been waiting here for the last 4 weeks for Gen: Fuller's orders but recieved none, even then here I done all I could for the good of the Country.

I went day and night around before the Election, to gett some of my Countrymen straight, and helpd to arrest some of the bushwackers; - If I only could gett to see some of my polit. Friends here, they would take some steps for me, but nobody is allowed to come to camp. If I col. was not innocent, and done strictly according to my Orders, I would not say anything.

Now I would beg of you Col. with all my heart, to go and see Gov: Yates yourself, explain him the whole case, let him see my Orders, they even have copies of them in the Adjt. Gen's office, and I know and satisfied that Gov. Yates a true Soldiers friend will have me or at least by his influence have me released; and mustered in as Capt; or not succeding in that mustered out of the Service, then it would Col. be very hard for me to serve as a Private amongst men, who I commanded for three years, and often had to punish. - No Colonel, Do all you can for me, I beg you, and soon, then I am informed from Hd. Quarters to day, that if I was not released by Wuenesday, I will be send to Cincinati.

Trough the influence of Lt. Morris Post Adjt, I procured the favor of sending those lines to you. Do all you can for me, and take at present or Soldier's thanks for it - I am Col.

very Respct your obt. Servant

Charles Kittel

Late Capt. Co. "E" 58th Infy

[illegible]

Should I Colonel suffer like this, if Adjt. General, dont give me any Orders or instructions.

A letter directed to Capt. Charles Kittel care of Lieut. Morris

Post Adjutant

Springfield Ills.

Servant

Sir

I understand that you are the soldiers friend & that is my reason for addressing you. I first enlisted at East Lasalle Co. Ill June 7th 1861 & was with Col. Mulligan at Lexington Mo. was captured there sent to Chicago & discharged from service. I reenlisted Jan. 2nd 1862 under Col. Cushman of 53rd Ill Vol. of which Regt. I am now a veteran vol. When the 53rd went into camp Douglas I was detailed in Hosp. as a nurse, & was left behind my Regt. as such in Gen. Hosp. After the 53rd had left there, I was induced by fair promises to again join the 23rd, and they put my name on their rolls, but I was not mustered into that Regt. so after they had gone to Virginia I got to thinking the matter over, and

wrote to you in Jan 1863 to see what I should do in the matter as they of the 23rd had failed to keep their promises to me. Capt. S.A. Simmason got an answer to my letter to you, also the one I sent you, and threatened to finish me for writing to you about it, so I deserted his Regt 23rd went to Pa. where my family was then, and am now living. I was arrested as a deserter from the 23rd Regt. in Oct. but told the Provost Marshall that I belonged to the 53rd, so he sent me here. My papers & charges were sent to the late lamented McPherson and inducement held out that if I would reenlist as a veteran it would go easier with me, & I was charged as being a deserter for about 18 months, whereas I was not out of service but about half that time, from Feb to Oct. The sentence was that there $100 Dollars of my pay stopped & cost of arrest.

When our Regt. was paid off at Vicksburg just before going home on their vet. furlough, the paymaster refused to pay me, although & had been mustered as a veteran. Now what I want is to have something done for my suffering family for the people where they lives refuse to help them for they say she belongs to Ill & I thank God that I am an Ill. soldier

I have not as you see drawn a cent of pay from the Govt. since Jan. 1863, and my family have nothing to sustain them; but the last letter I got from them my wife was sick & about to be thrown upon the town as happens. I have a wife, a boy 8 years, & a girl 4 years old. Her address is Susan E. Knapp Carbondale Luzerne Co. Pa. Trusting to your humanity to help them in this their time of need I will remain as ever Your Faithful Servant

During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>
