During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants.

I have reluctantly concluded to again call on you for a favour to wit From present indications orders will soon be issued to muster out of service a large portion of the Pay Dept. I dont know what if any particular rule until adopted (perhaps none) Inasmuch as I have been in the business the past two & a half years and flatter myself that I am somewhat posted in my duties. I would be glad to remain in the service for the present, for the following reasons. My business at home is of cource broken up and it is considered rather an unfavourable time to commence anew, and for the additional reason, that the final accounting officer at Washington (owing to the great amount of business conducted in his office) is far behind in settling

up with disbursing officers and will necesisarily be for some considerable time to come owing to the fact that maney have resigned & maney others will be mustered out. It of cource would be desirable to me to remain in the service till I could settle up my accounts promptly at Washington as it will require the attention of disbursing officers more or less till their accounts are finally settle up. I feel confident that an intimation from you to the Hon Sec of War that he would retain me in the service as long as additionell PMs are required of cource he can regulate & designate those that are to be retained and think he would not hesitate to accomodate your wishes in the matter. I presume orders will soon be issued designating those to be mustered out.

With high regard

I Sincerely hope the Legislature will carry out the will of the people in electing a Senator. I certainly think the outrageous and unprecedented cource of the conspirators will react on them. They have been making a most desperate effort to prejudice Pinckney by appealing among other things to his former religious teachings (He is a preacher) but he holds out firm. The only consolation he has given them is that of what they Say is true he would be compelled to vote for Palmer. Cullom is an old Student

Dear Governor

I have just received notice to proceed to Louisville without delay. I very much regret it as I intended to Spend a few days in Springfield next week.

Cullom is an old Student

of his and he will rely on what Cullom Says to Some extent concerning their Slanderous Stories.

I presume of Cource Cullom is all right.

All the Federal Appointments made in this County with perhaps two or three exceptions were made at Washburns Solicitation and he has not been Sparing with his favours the past two years. in this county, the recipients of his favours have been quite Active, but have not Succeeded in accomplishing anything up to date, I Shall anxiously await the result,

Regrets that he is ordered to Louisville and cannot be here to Legislature.

Pinkney is besieged very extensively by the opposition who appeal to his religious feelings (he is a preacher) He still holds out firm and his vote depends on Cullum's influence, who was once a student of his.

Davis married Sarah Woodruff Walker in 1838 and they had five children including George Perrin Davis and Sarah "Sally" Davis.

In 1844, Davis won election as a Whig to the Illinois Legislature, and four years later was elected Judge of Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served on the bench during Lincoln's remaining years as an attorney on the circuit. The two became close friends, and Davis worked diligently as Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican nominating convention in Chicago.

In 1862, President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court, where Davis wrote the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan, a landmark decision restricting the rights of military courts to try civilians. In 1877, he resigned from the court after being elected to the United States Senate by the Illinois Legislature. Davis served as Senate president pro tempore from 1881 to 1883, and was known unofficially as "Mr. Vice President." He retired from the Senate in 1883.

Davis invested in real estate with De Witt County attorney, Clifton H. Moore, and became a man of considerable wealth. He had the distinction of being the largest landowner in Illinois. At the time of his death, June 26, 1886, his estate was valued between four to five million dollars-a huge fortune in his day.

The finding aid for the David Davis Family Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/165.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of several members of the David Davis and George P. Davis families. The collection also includes portraits of Judge Davis' law colleagues, images of Bloomington, Illinois, and photographs of miscellaneous buildings throughout the United States.</text>
