Dear Governor Yates.
I have been thinking that I should like to do something for my Country before I go hence and be no more seen. If you think me worthy I would like to go down to Cairo, as Chaplen to the Army, at that place. I think I could pray for, and talk too, and simpothise with the soldiers, and might do some little good in that way to the Glory of God. and the good of my Country. things are going on about rite down here. I never felt more like Praying for all that are in authority; that we my lead a quiet and Peaceable life in all godliness. and honesty; your old friend and [hune?] servent Wm Edwards
