Chicago April 30 1861
To His Excellency
Govr Yates,
Dear Sir
I trust you
will find time to read this Letter, for its purpose is to recommend to your favourable Consideration its bearer John A Thompson Esqr of this City.
Mr Thompson has been a prominent Lawyer residing in Chicago for ten years, during which time he has filled with marked ability and success the Office of Attorny and Counsellor for the City.
The two years last past has been spent by him upon the frontiers of Missouri and the Cherokee Nation, but in anticipation of the War now upon us, he has returned to act in
concert with those devoted to the Union and the Old Flag.
I take great pleasure in recommending him in all respects, as competent, willing, true, and faithful in the Execution of any trust which his own judgment would allow him to accept, and as a person who is disposed in a military capacity, to Endanger his own life for his Countrys good, should receive Encouragement and support.
At present Mr Thompson is in command of Surplus Men in Camp Yates, in which position at least if no other duty should demand his services, I trust will be confirmed
Yours Respectfully
Wm. L. Church
