Hon. Lyman Trumbull
Dear Sir
I wish in the present emergency to serve my country in the most efficient way, & being persuaded that my professional education & experience as a Christian minister have fitted me to be more useful as a Chaplain than in any other capacity, I desire an appointment to that service. I am now forty six years of age, have been twenty years in the ministry & for the last four years have been editor of the above named religious paper.
Any thing you can do to further my aims in this matter will be gratefully appreciated by

I add a word to the application of my brother & by to say that his kind & intelligent sympathy render him in the judgment of perhaps a too partial brother, a fit person to be appointed to guide & aid the soldier in this great struggle. It will be esteemed a great personal favor (and I have no doubt it will be a public advantage) if you can find ways to aid him in this application.
Most Respectfully
