Mattoon Ill May 4th 1861
Gov Yates
Dear Sir
Through the solicitations of many of our citizens I this morning write you to request of you the consideration of fixing Mattoon as the point for the rendezvous of the Regiment of this Congressional District. We have learned that the objection to Mattoon is the scarsity of wood in regard to that we can only say that wood is as cheap & as easily obtained here as at Charleston, and this certainly is the natural point for the Regiment to be kept as it could be sent from here by R R in any direction.
Hoping that you will give the matter a favorable consideration I subscribe myself Your Obt

If agreeable to you I should like very much to have the appointment of Commissary of the Regiment of this District while organizing and drilling. I would refer you to Hon F. A. Marshall for information in regard to my qualifications to fill the office If that office is filled by some other person I should like some other situation as good if agreeable to your wishes. I would be very much pleased to have a permanant position in the army
I am Sir
Yours Very Respect
