Salem Ill. May 11th 1861
His Excellency
Richard Yates
Governor of the State of Illinois
Dear Sir
Though I have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with you, I take the liberty of addrefsing you this note upon a matter of common interest. My heart is with my country, the government, in this struggle and I have a strong desire to render some service. Have you a vacant chaplaincy? If so, I would be glad, if judged competent to fill it. Last fall I was appointed by Bishop Simpson to the Litchfield Station, Southern Illinois Conf., but a severe bereavement in the loss of my dear wife, has called me home temporarily. I send no petition, for such a course my taste condemns
with reference to such a position. I will only refer you to Dr. J. B. Covington of Jerseyville Ill; Dr. Jno Van Clive P. E. of Alton Ill; Rev C J. Honts my P. E. of Brighton Ill; and to any, or all of the ministers of Southern Illinois Conf.
An answer at your earliest convenience is requested
May Kind Heaven prosper you and the Administration in the effort to save our hitherto happy and prosperous government
Very Resply Lc
