Maj Genl. H. W. Halleck
Saint Louis Mo.
General,
Captains Warren Shedd and James R Wilson, representing the 30th & 31st Regiments Ills. Inftny, (whom I now introduce to you,) visit you for the purpose of procuring an order for their removal from the field to some post in Illinois, where they can have an opportunity of restoring their health now greatly impaired, and of filling up their sadly thinned ranks. These regiments have now been in the service eight months, have been in all the battles on their line, & have endured more hardships than most regiments from our State. Their muster rolls speak for themselves, as to their present condition.
Should you grant their requests, which I am
greatly in hope you can consistently do, I respectfully suggest that they be ordered into camp here. The following reasons I think are conclusive on this point, First, there are comfortable quarters here, and we are at the centre of the State, which is easily accessible. Second, the troops now here are Cavalry, and ought to be in the field, where they are anxious to go. These remnants of Infantry regiments would answer as well to guard our prisoners (and better) than the Cavalry, with much less expense. Finally, the prospect of recruiting here is good.
I remain General,
Respectfully yours,
Richd Yates,
Governor of Ills.
