Dear Sir,

In reply to yours of the 15th inst. Surgeons are only appointed upon the recommendation of Colonels of Regiments. I have applied for authority to appoint additional assists - but have as yet failed to obtain it. If you know of any vacancy where your services would be acceptable I will be happy to appoint you. Hospitals are under the entire control of the U.S. Authorities. If any opening occurs for Special Surgeons I will advise you at once.

Yours in regard to the establishment of a hospital at your place, just received, has been referred to Gen. Halleck with the request that it be done.
