Sept. 5 [186]2.
Major General John A. McClernand
Dear Sir:
I do not know how better service could be rendered now than by instructing the new Regiments, and would be much obliged if you would detail some members of your staff for that service. Several officers would find constant employment at Camp Butler, where 4 Regiments are stationed. There is one Regiment, Col. Lathams, at Lincoln, Logan Co; three Regiments at Anna; three at Dixon; 4 at Rockford, one Regt. at Shawneetown; one at Jacksonville, one at Decatur and one at Carlinville. At Camp Butler also a fine Comp.
of Artillery
You will in your discretion, detail members of our staff to such of the above points, as you may prefer. I beg to suggest, that as these Regiments will soon leave for the battlefield, speedy action in this matter would be most desirable.
I am, General,
very respectfully yours,
Richd Yates
Governor
