His Excellency

President Lincoln

I most earnestly request you to give Gen Hurlbut the investigation he seeks. I was at Memphis just before Gen Grierson went out on the expedition against Forrest referred to. I most sincerely believe that Gen H. will acquit himself triumphantly. I have the highest regard for Gen. Sherman, but think he was hasty and will recall his charge. Since I recommended Gen. Hurlbut for Brig. Gen. I have had no reason to change my opinion. He did nobly in the field. I think him cut out for a General and I sincerely hope

you will order him to some important command and if in the Field I have not the least doubt he will sustain himself ably and well.

Very Truly
