To His Excellency

Permit me to introduce to your kind attention my esteemed & valued friend David Goodrich Esqr. of our City & the Father of the young Mr. Edward Goodrich for whom I solicited a Capt. Commission of Ills Vol. & which you kindly promised me for him when I had the pleasure of seeing you in N.Y. Mr Goodrich learns that Genl McClernand is about leaving to join Genl Burk & take Command of his old Division, the Mercantile Battery, in which his son is a member. & was formerly in the Genl Division. Mr G. feels quite anxious to have an interview with the Genl. I would esteem it a particular favor if you would be pleased to give a note of introduction. He will make known to you his wishes. It gives me pleasure to say Mr Goodrich is a gentleman of the highest responsibility whos word is in all respects reliable. Any aid you may render him will be gratefully recd duly remembered & reciprocated.
By your friend
P H Willard
P.S. I hope the commission is executed.
