State of Illinois Executive Department Springfield Feby 2 1864
Major Genl US Grant
Dear General
I desire to write you a confidential letter at the request of Col Tillson, 10th Ills Infantry. From his statements, he and most of his officers lack confidence in General Morgan and desire to be transfered to another command. So far as he is concerned (Col Tillson) I can see that the feeling is such that I think it would be better that he was under a different command. Genl Wood and Col Grimshaw as he says share largely in the same desire. It is perhaps not proper for me to write you confidentially on such a subject - my excuse is that I presume a letter on our former friendship - I do so because I do not wish to express any opinion as to who is at fault, Genl M. or Col T. but simply for the good of both and the service. From a longer acquaintance with Col. T. than you have, I feel that the change is very necessary and if you can have it made I am satisfied that it will be for the best. Col T. I am sure has the capacity for a splendid officer, and if you can consistently favor him in this behalf , you will not I think regret it. I have also entertained the highest opinion of Gen'l Morgan and do not wish to reflect upon him There seems to be [unconculobl?] misunderstanding which might be avoided by the change. I would be glad to hear from you on the subject, again requesting that you
will consider my communication as confidential. Further I hope that if change is made as good a regiment will be assigned to Genl Morgan.
Truly Your friend
