Gov Yates -
Dear Sir - After my best regards to you and acknowledgment to your courtesy & kindness for past favors, I wish to say to you that I have assured Samuel Johnson Corporal Co. "I" 106 Regiment Ills. Vol. Infantry - who has been home for two months on recruiting service and has filled his own company that if he would fill Company "H" 106 - which is short 20 men that he, if Cols. Latham & Yates could effect such a result, with you, should be commissioned Second Lieut - Company "H." 106 Regt. The company has a capt Danforth & 1st Lieut. Berry - and can not get a second Lieut without having first been recruited
and a new company forming offered Johnson a 1st Lieutenancy if he would get the 20 men - which he can do, but don't want to leave Col Latham and Co "H" can never be filled in my judgment unless he fills it - And I assure you that he is competent - is a number one man, and one of "Bobs" most favorite men in the Regiment - He is recruiting fast - and I know that nothing would please Latham more than to have him commissioned, and that there could but little else occur that he would regret more than to loose him from the Regiment and fail to fill company "H" - which when fully recruited will fill up his Regiment -
Johnson wants to know something about the matter - and I
again assure you that it is not only for the interest of the service and the Regiment but to the interest of the Cols Latham & Yates for the appointment to the made - It wrongs and it will wrong no one - but on the contrary it is just and proper, and would give general satisfaction in the Regiment -
Recruiting is going on here quite brisk, but there are so many parties engaged in it that to get 20 men is no small job -
Please write me what I may so to Johnson -
Yours truly
