To His Excellency
Governor Yates,
of Illinois.
My dear Sir,
Your letter dated Feby. 9th has this moment reached me. You kindly invite me to Springfield to make an examination of materials for a certain biography---and as kindly, offer to try your best to obtain for me some temporary employment in some one, or other, of your offices.
I have been very sick with fever & ague for a month---during most of which time I have been confined to my chamber. I am better now, but not over & above strong---altho my wife is a capital nurse, and has [sustained?] me, by order of my physicians, with strong Beef Tea, and stronger brandy.
I hope to be strong enough to come to Springfield on Monday 29th or Tuesday at latest---when I shall avail myself of your profered hospitality at the Mansion.
Most truly your Friend,
Geo. S. Phillips
