Gov Yates,
Dear sir
One day last week the 45 "lead mine Reg" went home on the Ill CRR. At Wappella in this co they had to stop for two hours while there about 15 of the men (poss 10 to 20. Ludwick says) entered the shop of Maurice Ludwick an excellent little Irishman (hating his democracy) Literally gutted it taking away about 45 pairs of boots & 185,00 worth of leather. They had no quarrel with him did not know him nor did he make any resistance It was in the night they would not permit him to strike a light. He cannot identify the men only that they belonged to that regiment. He is an industrious young Irishman who has always behaved himself well this act has about ruined him and the citizens here think he deserves protection and that the Reg should be made to repay it ([illegible]) Stop it out of their next pay. This will satisfy every one, the cash value of the property taken L says is $500, Please use your influence to have this done (the Reg is in Gen Leggitts division) & to Stop future agressions of this Kind. A repetition of this will ruin our cause here & must be stopped or no man can be safe. Hoping that you will see this in the same light I remain yours &c

The 45th Reg on their way home Stopped at Wapella entered the Store of Irish Ludwick, and carried off all the property about $500 worth, which he thinks Should be Compensated for in Some way.
Refer this letter to Gen. Leggett & write Moore have so referred it - that I will try & have it arranged agst Regt.
