Marion Williamson Co Ill May 28th 1861
Hon Richard Yates
Gov of the State of Ill
Dear Sir -
Your Excellency has no doubt, ere this, been informed of the disunion feeling existing in Marion Ill. - brought about by disappointed politicians. Logan, Cunningham, Hundley, Pulley and others, have assisted in getting up a company for the so called "Southern Confederacy." The company so organized, departed rejoicing in their treacherous mission of blood: and the men above named, are making efforts for another company, whose destination will be the same. They have mobbed the Press, and driven away the Editor. The few Union men therefore, privately petition your Excellency to quarter soldiers in Marion, for the protection of our lives, and property. The freedom of speech, and the freedom of the Press, is buried far down in this the darkest hole in "Egypt."
Yours Truly
