Friend Snyder

Yours of the 9th inst is at hand. I was greately disappointed at not seeing the Gov when here. I wanted to see him badly in relation to many things. I write you at this time under the impression that you go to Washington with the Gov, yet in consideration of the chances, I shall send this in the case Col Woods with directions &c.

On account of my late serious illness I require a change. I wrote the Gov in relation to it, & am in receipt of a letter from him today. He writes - "if you will decide what position you will apply for, I will give you strong letter &c." The Gov writes me a very kind letter & assures me of his assistance.

Not having been an office seeker, I am not well posted as to what offices are vacant that will pay & find it difficult to get here the information I would desire. I have my mind upon the following offices which I understand are vacant, but have not been able to

inform myself whether or not the Prest will fill the vacancies.

U.S. Marshall for the south Dist of Mississippi

U.S. Marshal for the Eastern Dist of Arkansas

Direct Tax Commissioner for Arkansas

Direct Tax Commissioner for Miss.--

I would prefer a Marshallship --provided, the court is to be organized within a reasonable time. If no prospect of same, then at this distance from Washington, & my limited information, a Direct Tax Commissionership is the only thing I can think of. I know no reason why the Prest should not soon proceed to organize the Dist Courts in the States reclaimed, or partially so, from the rebellion -- and in the course of human events, this is to be done, a Marshalship would be Just the thing for me.

Now any information in relation to the above will be gratefully received & remembered. If you go to Washington the information I require will be at hand -- viz -- whither the courts are to be established & marshals appointed. I am sorry to trouble you but situated as I am, not being able to leave my duties I am obliged to seek information in this way.

The Gov writes that I had better get other recommendations, I shall do so -- having had many offered me -- but it will take some little time to bring things about, and if any thing can be done

in the mean time I shall be very glad. With that view, I have thought if you went to Washington with the Gov, & he had the time to spare, that perhaps he could secure either the marshalship or Direct Tax Commissionership for Miss or Ark -- agreeable to the information you might obtain -- so you see I am depending much upon you -- & hope that you are in Wash ere this.

Please write me receipt & oblige

Yours very truly
