My Dear Sir,

My son, David Russell Wilson, as soon as the call was made, volunteered in Compy A. Chicago Light Artillery, and was marched the next day to Cairo, where his company is now stationed. At the time, he had the assurance of a place in the Post Office here, but patriotism prevailed; & he promptly tendered his services. He is a good scholar, active, energetic, enthusiastic; and of very good address; and he thinks, and so do I, that he might render more valuable services if he was placed in a position where he could do so; and where he would be in the way of promotion. My four sons & myself, labored hard for Lincoln; and this is the only one for whom I have asked position; and I am more desirous that he should be provided for than any other thing in life. He is every way worthy, and I will guaranty, will render good & efficient service in any position in which he may be placed. Will you, then, my dear Sir, do me the special, personal favor, to give him an office in the Quarter master's Department; or if that cannot be done; will you give him an appointment on your Staff; or intercede for an appointment for him on the Staff of Genl Prentiss, Col Oglesby, or one of the Field Officers. I earnestly request this, as a personal, special favor, which I shall esteem most highly, as long as I live; and I will guaranty, he will discharge the duties, with credit.
