Description
Chicago mayor Anton Cermak shakes the hand of a pilot during a visit to Camp Grant. Cermak served as mayor from 1931 until his assassination in 1933. Camp Grant, located near Rockford, was a U.S. Army facility from its opening in 1917 until 1924, when it was transferred to the Illinois National Guard. The federal government resumed control of the camp in 1940, when it resumed its original role as an Army training base. During World War II, the facility also served as a prisoner of war camp. Camp Grant closed in 1946. Along with Major Cermack, other individuals later identified on the photograph are "Kohan," "Pat Dunn," "Nelson," "Allen," and "May McElvain."
