Black was a Union Army Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet-Brigadier General during the American Civil War, a U.S. Congressman, and a U.S. District Attorney at Chicago. Joseph Gurney ("Uncle Joe") Cannon was perhaps the most powerful Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the history of Congress.
